Most Aussie bands sell out their original sound in order to get bigger overseas exposure. INXS was one: their first single "Just Keep Walking" was, in my opinion, easily their best and purest. Cold Chisel didn't sell out so much, but their singer Jimmy Barnes went on to a HUGE but much less interesting solo career. As far as Oz bands go, I really rate early AC/DC (with Bon Scott singing). The High Voltage album is a ripper. I also love Rose Tattoo, who Guns n Roses cite as an influence (for what it's worth). More contemporary Oz bands who rock are Jet (despite their incredible commercialisation they still blow the roof off of pub venues), Frenzal Rhomb (though their original bass player gave them a sound that the newer guy doesn't quite pull off) and Spiderbait (you've gotta love a singing drummer. Unless it's Phil Collins.) In case you can't tell, I think rock still shits all over techno, hip hop, etc.
