Here is my first potential problem.

If you go to http://www.fugly.com, you wind up here, at this site.

If you go to http://fugly.com, you also wind up here.

But if you wanted, you could also go to http://kjhdkuewiuy8ywe98398b2398bjkdfkudfiudsiukbfd98696.fugly.com/ and magically you would arrive here too.

I wrote to my host about it and here is their response:

There is a catch-all in DNS
    * IN CNAME www
So any "subdomain" for fugly.com will map to www.
    Do you want this removed?

I've been learning a lot about how search engines work lately I know that Google will ban sites completely from their system if they violate the rules.

Combine that with my intense paranoia and skepticism and naturally I am worried that having this catch-all in place has somehow done irreparable harm.

Ok, now that's not the end of it. There is more to the story.

While Googling ".fugly.com" and other variations of this domain name to see what came up, I ran across a page that a librarian at Idaho State University wrote back in October, 2004 about a guy that came in to the library and wanted to access Fugly.com.

It's hysterical. You should read it when you have time.

For any of you out there that don't know it, Fugly.com went through a brief period of financially desperate times when we tried everything and anything to make a buck.

Not at all like the present, financially fruitful, land of milk and honey times where we'll still try everything and anything to make a buck.

They're completely different times. Trust me.

Naturally we got banned and blacklisted almost everywhere that banning and blacklisting is possible.

What I want to know is, how does a site go about getting un-banned and de-blacklisted?

Jeff has spent a lot of time removing all the stuff that got us banned to begin with and I honestly don't think that, if scrutinized again we would be blocked at Universities and Libraries and a lot of other places.

So I guess my question is, are those filters permanent? Are we wasting our time working on this site at all? (I know the answer to that one already) Does it make more sense to just start something else and redirect people from Fugly.com to some new name because so many filters out there have blocked Fugly.com?

Let me be serious for a min, And only a min. The best way is to contact these websites and search engines in writing letting them know you have removed whatever they found to be inappropriate.

This should get you back on the list and engines. Back when I did sites I had too do this once.

On the oher hand I hate to see your selling out.

    Thank for your input.

I'm not banned from any search engines or websites. What I'm talking about is Parental Control software and other things that organizations like libraries and universities place in their internal networks to prevent anyone using said network from accessing Fugly.com.

Since I don't have a list of everyone doign that, it's not easy to contact them individually and request that they unblock me.

Also, since they're blocking traffic coming to and from my site, I don't think it's even possible to just shoot them an email.

PS. I deleted the other topic you added to this forum.

oh its ok it was a stab at him anyway for laughs, Now getting unblocked from that software is a whole other animal in itself.

Most if that software and anyone correct me if I'm wrong it has been years since I was designing webpages block people on certain keywords that are present on your site, IE: porn and the like. So if someone search for the word titty and fugly pops up its going to filter it.

The software might be more complex then that you might want to change your search footers in the HTLM code. If the software is blocking you because you are preloaded on the block list then your pretty much screwed and need to contact that company and inform them you have changed the way the site works.

Its a double edged sword really when you look at it. You ran the site a certain way for some many years that people see fugly and see a dick and fart joke site.

I have noticed how you have went away from that and are more politcal now, Which is a good thing even tho some people do enjoy a good dick joke now and again.

I was talking to a friend who is still doing the web thing, He was telling me that allot of sites are getting new addresses to get around the software.

Like a .org or .net then just doing a database swap to the new server and address shutting down the old and doing a redirect.

That way the software is not blocking your site and you can ramp up traffic.

Also have them remove the catch all, Its been going to that page for about about a month and half.

Also you can just delete that page make the main page the default index page and your good to go. Just delete it and then it will never cause a problem again. Because it looks to me that was a welcome page at one time and was marked as default someone changed it. Then they must have done a reorg the server and it got flaged as default again.

But yeah your pretty much screwed on the block issue I had some people I know in College try and access your site today and your blocked from almost all of them.

So its time to make a new site.

Ok. I understand that communication is going to be very difficult here, but... here goes.

If you navigate to the URL, http://www.fugly.com and get a page with a fake Miller High Life logo on it that says, Fugly High Life that is not a mistake. If you get something else, please let me know.

Will you please tell me what college it is that they attend?

Please ask each of your friends what filtering software their college or university uses.

If they go to fugly.com it should say, 'blockek by suck and such software'. More than likely it's Websense but it would be nice to know.

You might not be completely useless afterall, slack jaw.

OK I asked everyone again who I already talked to and all of them said Websense was the block.

I sent out messages to everyone else and will report back when I hear from them.

SurfControl has you on the list...

And I don't mean the "lift the red rope and let you in" list, either...
