TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - A community is shocked and devastated over the murder of a much loved cattle rancher near Douglas. Robert Krentz was well known in the local cattle community, with over 1000 cattle on his 35,000 ranch just 25 miles East of Douglas.

Krentz was found murdered on his property near a water well, and Cochise County Sheriff's deputies are working hard to find out what happened.

KGUN9 talked to some of the neighbors and fellow cattle ranchers in the area.

Tammy Smith, another rancher, said, "We lost a dear friend, we lost a dear neighbor, but more importantly, I think the country has lost. It's one life, but look at the magnitude of it. "

Krentz was found dead just hours after friends said he called home to tell his family he was going to help an illegal border crosser, and that he'd be home for dinner.

"You're out doing your job, minding your business and encounter innocently, but how do you know that individual is innocent or a terrorist? I mean they're terrorizing us," Smith said.

Smith was just one of more than a dozen people who had coincidentally scheduled a meeting at a nearby ranch to talk about the issue of border security. Tom Tancredo, former Congressman, was there to push for tougher immigration enforcement along the border.

"I met Rob and knew the family. It's a horrible thing. If anything positive can come from his death it's to secure these borders."

One man who asked to remain anonymous said, "I hold my own government responsible for this as much as the son of a [expletive deleted] who pulled the trigger."

The group says the violence, robberies, and destruction to their property has become commonplace.
