You know I actually remember sitting in class that day and thinking to myself "WTF am I doing wasting my time here" Theory was that ice glaciers from the last ice age left huge ice cubes under the ground and that the melted ice would leave pockets to later collapse. Who knows what the current stupid theory is now. But it just goes to show how fragile a grasp on reality science most of the time has. Here is the article and the pictures are pretty amazing. Hole opens in Guatemala neighborhood, 3 missing GUATEMALA CITY (Reuters) - Three people were missing on Friday after a 200-foot-deep hole opened up in the middle of a Guatemalan neighborhood, likely due to a burst sewer pipe. "It sounded like a bomb was dropping. Boom!" said Carlos Gutierrez, 58, of the crater, which measured 130 feet in diameter. The crater appeared in the capital's San Antonio neighborhood on Thursday night. Authorities evacuated hundreds of people on Friday fearing more land could collapse into a fast-flowing river of sewage below. The missing people had lived in a house that fell into the hole. Two bodies showed up about a mile downstream. Reuters Pictures Photo Neighbors said the ground had been shaking for weeks after a huge sewer pipe burst, making the ground underneath the houses unstable.
Re: They used to say in science class that these were due to underground ice dep Are you saying that at night Michael Jackson and his Thriller cast come up out of the hole?
Re: They used to say in science class that these were due to underground ice dep Damn... That's just a fucking crazy set of pictures. I love it.
Apparently that region has some of the largest caves in the world. A new one was recently discovered that I understand is a world record.
Re: They used to say in science class that these were due to underground ice dep I'd just like to meet the person that took the dump that burst the sewer pipe.
