Cut and paste from the Cold Sober forum - Boycotting a movie BEFORE you see it does not make sense. That is the equivalent of self censorship. The Passion of the Christ was an awesome movie. I did not like it as an evangelistic tool, I liked it as a really good performance of a "documentary" type. The original languages with subs was even cool. What I enjoyed about it was the subtil inclusion of Biblical "shadows and types" in the movie. Most people who were not theology majors would miss all of them. The movie was very intelligent and deep. For example, the snake that slithers out from under the cloak of the Devil in Gesthemene, with Jesus stepping on it's head. Many people balked at the idea of Jesus killing an animal, but they didn't understand the sybolism. The scene goes back to Genesis 3:15, where God promised Adam that he would send a "seed of the woman" to crush the head of the "Serpent" (Satan). Unless you were familiar with scripture, the scene makes no sense. There were many other scenes like that in the movie. The weaving of "hidden mysteries" in the movie was what I found intriguing. As far as the beating of Jesus by the Roman guards - I found it to be about the spiritual equivalent to pornography. It was excessive, and the whole point of the importance of the flogging was lost because of the excessive lengths Gibson went to to make it gruesome. I also was turned off by the Catholic slant on the glorification of Mary in the movie. That seemed a little unbalanced to me. Anyway, it's a movie worth seeing. If you are expecting it to be a religious propaganda tool, you are wrong. I am sure that some people tried to use it that way, but that was not the way I saw the movie. Spend the $5.00 and rent the DVD. Barry
I see we're changing our avatars. Must be getting close to football season. Where you at, phatboy? I saw the "Passion." I missed those references as I am not as well educated on the Bible as I'd like to be.
Im in Augusta, GA. Bout an hour and a half from the greatest place on earth - Athens, GA I havent seen "the passion" yet either. Ive seen bits and pieces in church, but not the whole movie.
I was going to see until I found Santa Claus is nowhere to be seen. I have no moral stance for not seeing the movie, I'm just not too curious about christian mythology.
