I just watched the DVD. I think it's the best of the Saw series and I would say it is better and more gruesome than Hostel. Saw III has a couple of slow moments but there are some gut-wrenching-edge-of-your-seat thrills as well. You don't necessarily have to have seen Saw I & II to enjoy this flick, but there are many references that would be lost on you if you didn't.
Yeah, I would agree entirely with your review. It is a lot worse than Hostel. Great story in this one too, plenty of twists. Saw IV maybe?
Plenty of twists....that's reminiscent of one of the final scenes. Saw III displayed greater and more complex devices. I admit, I squirmed in my seat during part of it. There is a much better story to it than Hostel which seemed to have a weak (though based on true) story as merely a vehicle to launch its grisly torture scenes and special effects. It was interesting from a "Fangoria" perspective. Future Hostel spin-offs will likely look to raise the bar for carnage. Without revealing any spoilers, I can't see how a Saw IV would work unless they did a pre-quel with a lot more of Jigsaw's games leading up to the bathroom scene in Saw I. We'll have to watch Hostel II & III meet our gore quota.
