Went to San Antonio and Bandera TX last week and met the one and only Lomo. I'll be damned I did not have the camera with me but he got some pictures. Lomo was a gracious host and gave us some advice on seeing the sights around the hill country of Texas. I feel bad all I did was cooking Barry some fajitas and have some beers at the house when he was in Dallas earlier this year. Lomo showed us a good place to eat and a good place to enjoy an awesome view of the Japanese Tea Gardens at night. I like people who have no boundaries to trap them in. If it were not for my wife henpecking us the whole time I bet we would have talked each other into who knows what. Like breaking into the Alamo just to see it at night or something. I met the coolest bird at the San Antonio zoo it was a lesser Bird of Paradise. these birds are extremely flashy with the personality of an extrovert on crack. Apparently the zoo one may have been a pet and learned several words. Here is a video of one but it did not look like the one at the zoo there are various different species. I'll post a picture of the one at the Zoo. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P85LoHftEKs
I can remember pulling her chain a few times  - but I don't think I ever mentioned the Chupacabra, did I? She'd have probably wanted to leave even sooner if I had... At any rate, it was a great evening spent in good company. Had a great time, and wish I could've gone to Lost Maples with y'all. Maybe next time we can break into the Alamo, or visit Enchanted Rock at night...
Oh, and before Pimp has an opportunity to chime in on my half-decade lag in posting my long-lost 'tornado pics' - I'll have a few of these pics up in a couple days...
No one is close. I met Cheezedawg twice. I should have met Dwaine when I lived an hour from him, but I just started posting here and was scared.
Here's some pics I took from a visit to the park a few years ago: The sun, about to fall behind a distant hill behind the creek: Girlfriend at the time, surrounded by every color of the leaves: Some jackass showing off his gargantuan strength and lifting a boulder: The serenity of the 'inverse colliculus' (a homemade name of mine for this area of the park that is slightly removed from the beaten path...) It's beauty is ill captured in photographs. You simply must see it to appreciate it's beauty. When I first visited this area, I wanted to camp there and absorb the ambiance of this spot (nevermind the fact that we didn't have any camping gear - I *really* wanted to spend the night there.) One of my favorite pictures that I've ever taken... Truly captures the moment of a wonderful hike to the summit, overlooking nature's majesty, in the eyes of a first-time viewer. Overlooking the site where I had previously camped, well over a decade ago, while a 'Boy Scout.' (The only reason I ever joined was to go on these great camping trips...) Back when I went, there was a rope swing above the water, and a different latrine... Funny how certain details stick with ya... This final picture was taken in complete darkness, and pointed at a small, unknown source of noise during our pitch-black hike back to the car that evening. I heard something rustling in the leaves as we walked the trail, and despite the best efforts of my cell phone serving as a makeshift flashlight, I couldn't find the source of the sound. See if you can find the 'hidden object' in the picture... (Think back to Joe's "camouflaged snake" pic...)
Yep thats the East trail at Lost Maples alright. I have almost exactly the same picture of the rock overhang with the ferns growing upside down from the top. Remember this place I stopped and enjoyed the view from up there for a while. Why they call it Lost Maples.
Re: My eyes are hurting. I keep thinking there is a little baby jackrabbit I see but not sure. Also in the top corner there could be just a small part of something. How about a clue?
Seeing that picture you took really made me want to find mine... Yep... I think this is the same spot... look at the rock closely, she was probably sitting 20 yds. away from where you sat. I had to 'stand guard' at that outhouse while my girl was inside. She didn't want to shut the door because it stunk, so I was outside watching people at the summit looking down and taking pictures. God, I hope they had a good zoom lens...
San Antonio, eh? I had no idea you lived here. I'm stationed on Ft. Sam Houston. Where do you like to go shooting Lomo? I used to go to A Place to Shoot but that place sucks, no bump firing or any fun. I like going to the Bullet Hole.
I have a friend that wants to take me to that place... I've never checked it out, however. Check your PM's...
Big tooth Maple trees are seldom seen in West Texas except that specific area hence the name "Lost Maples". When I posted the pictures I kind of thought it may seem odd to someone from especially your area as there is so much fall color it would not seem to be a big deal but driving out to Lost Maples is kind of spectacular because you are in the hill country and its mostly green live oak trees and tan limestone. So when you drive 40 or so miles through Texas green hills and come up on the splash of color its a great change of scenery.
