Just in case anyone's missed it, enter the site thru the top-level URL ("www.fugly.com") - you should see this pop-up:

Go ahead and click YES, which installs an ActiveX control that's like a new dialup connection (extremely robust and sturdy to resist those accidental uninstalls, I'll bet) that sends you to one or more various porn sites, and not only conveniently bills your phone# for it but - here's the BEST part - does so at international rates! Is that bitchin' or what? I mean, what's better than paying $5, $10 or more per minute to browse some titty pics if it means helping out our FUGLY.COM webmaster?

To learn more about this sca...I mean, program in case you've got a website of your own to which you'd like to build a loyal following, go here and click on "Dialer".

For more info about this cash cow, email support@offshoreclicks.com. The company is registered in Stockholm, Sweden, but their website is actually hosted by some outfit in Florida. In any case, I don't think they'll charge you for the email.

Do you have some sort of a problem with that, Emetic? Do you have a better suggestion?

I posted that shit to symantec (nortons anti-virus) they have made that code and the other ones that company uses a security threat because it has properties of a trojan type virus. So kids, update youe virus lists and you shouldn't have to worry about it...

Call me an old-fashioned kinda guy, but yes, I do have a problem with that outfit's peculiar method of making money.

I think if someone wants to charge for a service, they should advertise the cost up front & the payment mechanism should be voluntary and offer recourse.

In the case of those off-shore dialer scams, arbitrary charges far above reasonable market rates are assessed to the domestic user's phone company bill by a foreign entity. What the charges shall be isn't made clear at the outset, and the user doesn't find out until they get their next bill. Then, rather unhappy with a $500 phone bill, they call their phone company to dispute it & are informed to the effect, 'Sorry, you did make the calls and we have no say about how Antigua El Telefono sets their rates - we just pass the charges along. Pay the bill or be disconnected (sucker)'. Nice.

Perhaps these dirty details are news to you. On the other hand, I could be wrong and have unfairly lumped OffshoreClicks into the same category as similar outfits I've heard about. Anyone want to volunteer as test subjects & install that sucker and try it out for a bit, and report back in a month or so? Show of hands...?

I could care less about the scam, I doubt I'd ever fall prey to one of 'em. Even though it does seem to be a shady way of doing business, fuck 'em. If you're stupid enough to click through and ignorant enough to not notice that your modem disconnects and redials, then you deserve the discomfort of the phone company's shaft ramming up your tight poop chute.

Its the same one as in the mysterious, disappearing sign-up-for-this-$3-porn-site-and-we'll-send-you-a-free-T shirt thread. I signed up like a sucker and downloaded what I thaught must have been some special pic viewing application.

But luckily I am always one to read the fine print after being previously scammed.

That had nothing at all to do with the dialer program, asshole. You didnt't sign up for it either, or we would have seen it. The 'sign up for this three dollar site' thread was for Trafficcash Gold. We get paid $35, regardless of whether or not you cancel after the $3 trial period. We made that offer and not one of you did it. Thanks for the support.

I had planned on looking into it, and I did... There are a few reasons I didn't sign up (aside from the thread's early removal):

    1) I don't give out credit card information online. Ever.

    2) If they're willing to spend $35 on a single signup, while only getting $3 from the signee, they're making it up somewhere else.... One can only imagine how they would do that, now that they have your CC#...

    3) If something seems too good to be true, chances are, it is.

It's not that we don't want to help fugly out, it's just that for the most part, we're battle-hardened scam avoiders. When I finally break down and buy a couple shirts from T-shirt hell, I'll make sure I click through to the site from yours so you at least get some form of compensation.

Please don't ever think that I am trying to scam you guys out of your money. If I post something like that in the Forums, you can be sure that it is legit.

I downloaded the software and installed it on my machine. Here's what happens:

A small dialog box appears and asks from what country you are dialing, and what type of modem you are using.

After you select them, you hit CONNECT and another dialog box pops up with the Disclaimer and Software user Agreement. It says very clearly:

VARADOX COMMUNICATIONS CORPORATION("Varadox") DIALER SOFTWARE AGREEMENT

CAREFULLY READ THE FOLLOWING AGREEMENT. THE SOFTWARE IS FOR USE SOLELY BY
RESPONSIBLE ADULTS OVER THE AGE OF 18 OR THE AGE OF CONSENT IN THE
JURISDICTION FROM WHICH YOU ARE DOWNLOADING THE SOFTWARE. BY CLICKING ON
THE "ACCEPT" BUTTON, YOU ARE CONSENTING TO BE BOUND BY AND ARE BECOMING A
PARTY TO THIS AGREEMENT. IF YOU DO NOT AGREE TO ALL OF THE TERMS OF THIS
AGREEMENT, CLICK THE "CANCEL" BUTTON AND PROCEED NO FURTHER.

There will be a per minute charge for each use of the software of 3.99 USD in the USA, 1.50
GBP in the UK, 3.53 DEM in Germany, and in all other countries international long distance rates
    apply.

I don't know how much more up front they can be about the charges. The fees are not hidden at the bottom of the agreement, nor are they vaguely disguised in some hard-to-read leagal mumbo-jumbo. They're right there at the top of the agreement.

I don't think there's anything wrong with including this on the site.

    Anyone else have an opinion?

I have no doubts as to your moral standing, it's the other company I'm apprehensive about...

If you get cash for every time that popup program is downloaded, I'll download it a few times onto this school computer.
