ok, i may have imagined this, and it may not exist yet, but is there anything that i can do to my dsl modem, which is already wireless compatible, so that it is the hub itself and a computer does not have to be plugged into it via ethernet? so that as long as it is on i can use my laptop anywhere in the house w/o plugging it into the modem?
    thanks in advance

First, quit drinking and retype in the morning.

Second, the DSL modem is wireless? I have seen that one yet, but not saying it isnt out there. The old stand-by is to purchase a wireless router, like LinkSYS or D-Link, and hook it up to the modem.

Depending on the DSL provider, I used BellSouth in the past, and I had to configure the modem, and then the router. PPPoE is the standard set up so that you dont have to put in a password over and over. Once you get into the modem, via IP, I think the setting you want to go with is 'bridged' this will get you online wirelessly.

I could type a longer post, but it is windy, and Bellsouth can actually walk you through most of it.....

jackass, you werent supposed to tell.

anyway that post made no sense at all. the modem is a westell versalink and yes its the all powerful bellsouth. thats about as far as i can get. guess ill call bellsouth next week and try to get them to figure it out. or maybe the cuties at best buy can help me too. thanks for your comic genius.

maybe the modem isnt wireless. i think i meant that its set up for wireless capability. in fact i think i said that. maybe youre the one who's toasted already. jackass.

Phat is right set the router up PPPoE and it will ask you to input the user name and password. It should stay connected. Then you simply set up a wireless connection preferably with wep encryption. And also set your router to a non-standard ip and password protect it.

You know my laptop has an intel pro wireless nic as well as my brothers Toshiba laptop and even after a clean re installation of the operating system and all the latest bios, firmware, and drivers. The wireless connection is unstable. Tweaking the settings on the nic driver for optimum stability does not help. But if I reboot into Ubuntu 6.05 the connection is rock solid. :-\

The router should have came with a setup disk that will step you thru it.

NOOOOOOO, first, never, I mean never, read the fucking instructions, and if you want to respect yourself in the morning, never use the CD. All you need is the routers IP address, and the default admin/passord.

Bellsouth modems are pretty decent. I had a westell for years. You can get into its settings via http:// and the bellsouth guy can give you the password and shit for it. I am almost 100% sure you have to setup the connection as 'bridged' on modem itself. The PPPoE setting on the router is so you dont have to key in a password when you go to connect.

Fuck WEP, you are in alabama, so no one there has any kind of PC knowledge, IE BARRY :D, so you should be safe running wide open. Of course if you live in a trailer park you may want to point the antannaes flat out......beware the pringles can wireless 'booster'.......which is sad, but it does work, google it, you will be stealing Internet Service in no time.

    Xactly

so if its a dlink it is likely 192.168.0.1 and the admin username is "admin" and the password is either blank or it also is "admin"
A Dell trumobile will generally use 192.168.1.100 ? I think if I remember correcty. Does not matter this is silly google search your router make and model and "admin logon" or something like that. If it is some isp propriatory shit then put "BellSouthg" in the search.

Or while online wired goto the command ..... never mind.

hit the windows logo key. Then goto [run] in the run menu type "cmd" and press [enter] now type ipconfig /all and press enter now make note of your gateway ip address. Then goto internet explorer and type that number into the address bar.

just for the recoed 192.168.0.1 is the common loopback address for all routers

*cough* I was trying to help the OP who sounded like they knew shit from shineola. The easiest and the fastest way for them to step by step thru the process without confusing them is to use the setup disk.

It will do all the shit for them and they won't have to stress their brain.

Hold off on calling BellSouth. They'll want to charge you extra for the LAN. Set it up yourself. Get a Linksys wireless router and call them for tech support if you need to.

Maybe Bellsouth is different in alabama, they didnt charge me any more for my setup. They only give you so much bandwidth, and the tech told me they didnt care how many PCs you hooked up to it. I was running 6 and an XBOX, without much issue, I couldnt host a good room on the XBOX, but I wouldnt cause any lag in any one elses room.

You know when Comcast first got into the broadband cable business they were using their cable modem to set their mtu , throughput and such. A buddy of mine managed to get the modem admin p/w and we would bump it up for online gaming and large file transfers. The trick was to not do it all the time and bring suspicion on yourself. So we would do it for playing Halo online. As far as ftp transfers from me to him or visa versa. I do not think that would ever notice cause he lived a few blocks away and our external ip's were on the same subnet/ vlan or whatever.

I understand now that they set it at the switch.

Whenever you get your system setup initially. Be smart and plug a key logger into your ps/2 port before the tech showes up. If your lucky he will use your computer to logon with his credentials. They are getting smarter now and bring their laptos along for that reason. ;)
