Dumb question, I know. I have a lilac bush that has other weird shit growing in it and choking it out. It looks like a mess and everyone tells me to get rid of it, but I want to try to salvage it. It's probably pretty old and I want to keep it. Can you dig those suckers up and replant them?
yeah, they can be salvaged. i have a bunch of lilacs that i want to do the same with. they are looking a little crappy . the leaves are all small and shriveled. from what ive read, the time to transplant them will be coming up in the fall when the plants have gone dormant and dropped their leaves. its pretty easy to find info around on how to do it.
when you do dig them up, try to get as many of the roots and little runners as possible, dont damage them when you dig them up, that ends up being the vital part of the plant.
With any plant, preserving the rootstock is of utmost importance. Seeing as how you might have invasive roots makes it a bit trickier. Replant, saving as much of the root ball as possible, but put it in a pot. This way, you can easily identify and eradicate any unwanted plants. Once done, plant it wherever you want it.
better said than me motil. and thats even more important with lilacs. they will be what keeps the plant going after transplanting them
