So about these other ISPs - where do they get the internet from? Does AOL let 'em connect to their servers for it, like a chat program does?

AOL is your ISP b/c that is what you use to connect to the internet. if u used MSN to connect to the internet, then MSN would be your ISP. Each ISP has its own server(s), there is not only one server in the world. AOL is a service, a service , that lets u connect to the net. Just like Juno, Netzero, DSL from Bell, and all the others are services that we use, pay for, steal just to connect to the internet. Understand now? if u need me to, i can call u and explain further... this MUST be understood
Emetic, please don't answer. Because I don't think I can take much more... And I fear it could go on for ever!

Another thing I'm a bit hazy on: I wanna get a URL for a website and email, and I know registering it with the DNS has something to do with it. But I don't want the DNS people reading my email - is it possible to set it up so my new URL email doesn't go thru the DNS but goes directly to the recipient? If so, how would that work - how would the mail know where to go by itself? Kitana...?
at the computer store the other day, they said i "need a UPS for my PSU so my CPU wouldn't get fried"... is this true? kitana?... anyone?
I haven't a clue what you guys are talking about! Although I did understand the very last thing IMC said...

My ISP is Bell DSL. Your current ISP, freeserve, wants u to switch to DSL. Usually, when u get DSL, u are given a free dialup number, from that same company, to use just in case your DSL fails, which happens b/c of weather, technical crap, etc. Now, u currently have a dialup from freeserve, they shouldnt charge u for that one if u were to switch to DSL or they would discontinue that one dialup and give u another. BUT, to make sure u need to ask and get everything in writing. ----------------
quote:
Originally posted by American Sociopath: so let me get this straight. So what I think im trying to say kuntuna, is you are retarded

b/c of AS's mispelling and grammatical errors, from what i understood is that... Your ISP is not AOL, u dont have DSL, u have a dial-up, and AOL offers you DSL, but when they asked your for your phone number (they look at the area code), they say you cannot have DSL, but ISDN instead from SOL. I understand that in your area, they do not offer DSL, they offer ISDN. The ISP/company that would offer ISDN would be SOL. AOL doesnt offer DSL for your area. You are the retarded one, assmuncher -----------------------
quote:
Originally posted by Emetic: Another thing I'm a bit hazy on: I wanna get a URL for a website and email, and I know registering it with the DNS has something to do with it. Sounds more like hacker stuff, but if u are uncertain, u need to ask the company that u plan to use about safety and security. Each company has its own rules/regulations/crap. Email we send out has to go through a server before it reaches the recipient. When we dial-up, we dial up to a network...we send mail and it goes through that same shit - network, servers, etc b4 reaching the recipient. Unless you are using PGP, encryptions, or some code, your email can probably get rerouted from anywhere, although i dont think hackers or the DNS ppl would give a shit about what you send out...unless u were being monitored by the FBI or targetted by some hacker gang/mafia. ???? Got something to hide? ------------------
quote:
Originally posted by PimpDaddy: at the computer store the other day, they said i "need a UPS for my PSU so my CPU wouldn't get fried"... is this true? kitana?... anyone?

UPS - United Parcel Service or Uninterruptible Power Supplies??? PSU - P. State University or Power System Unit or Power Supply Unit??? CPU - Central Processing Unit You would need the UPS to protect your comp in case of a power outtage, it would give your comp a few minutes of power after an outtage so that u could save your stuff and shut down with no probs. The P System U is several different things supplying energy and P Supply U would be the outlet. So, Pimp would need protection against a power outtage so that his comp wouldnt get fried. kind of like the surge protectors, only some electricity is stored to keep the comp running a bit longer so that u can shut down w/o losing info. i think thats what he meant, those letters can stand for diff things just ask, read, and learn.
thank you kitana.. thats really helped me to save my meagre cash
quote:
Originally posted by 666kitana999: or targetted by some hacker gang

like your boyfriend TrueCumStaiyan's gang... D12.. i mean L13??
