Watched this again last night http://www.cbc.ca/fifth/denialmachine/video.html and I can't believe that someone calling themselves a scientist can really believe that humans are not having a negative impact on the planet. Then again most of these 'scientists' also said there was no negative effects from cigarettes too. The ability of the energy companies to even make this into a debate when there is overwhelming evidence that global warming is real and the world needs to change now to even slow it down is a frightening look at how marketing and spin shapes government policies and that we are probably going to be debating this until it will be too late,or that it will take drastic changes to our way of life in order to make any kind of a difference. The leader of the most powerful nation on earth having a vested interest in not making policy that will adversely affect his friends and alllies will keep global warming as more of a hypothoses than the fact it is. If the money that has been spent on the Iraq war had been spent developing ways to change our dependency on fossil fuels this probably wouldn't be an issue but where would that leave the energy companies, maybe building wind turbines and nuclear reactors, but how could they keep raising the price when a car bomb goes off in Iraq, saying the instability in the region causes it,or that national reserves are low just before every long weekend. Change is always scary and people like having the conviences that the status quo provides but for how much longer can it be sustained?
Scientist depend on funding to do their research and the message has been put out in the scientific community that under no uncertian terms denial of global warming will result in a removal of funds from any project you are working on. No need to worry Homer the Deniers are being shutdown systematically so you're delicate thought process will not have to consider what they have to say.
That's ok Joe my delicate thought process will continue to process everything that is said even from the deniers, but it won't matter soon because all focus will be turned from the enviroment to the next threat to American security,Iran, and the public will be more focused on how they can pay for their 150 dollar a barrel oil than the palm trees growing in Alaska.
Now you could have just come out with some sort of. "No that's not true Joe because I know some scientists that are getting loads of research money just becuause they deny." It would not be true but hey you're in a forum just stick to your guns and say that I don't know who you know blah blah blah .... some shit like that. Sounds like the situation is grim indeed.
Did you even watch the program ,the scientists that the Bush administration use in their denial are all funded by the energy sector but I guess that doesn't matter, it is just some more liberal nonsense that these scientists are doing it for the money and not for the benefit of mankind. The Bushies don't have to trick anyone they just have to get the public scared enough of the imminent threat that Iran poses, manufacture some bullshit intelligence, then make it classified so that they never have to show the world that they are lying. Try turning Fox news off for awhile and see how the rest of the world really views the Bush administration and the policies they implement.Bush is trying to impose his will here in Canada with threats that trade and border security will be affected if we don't fall in line. They even want to build a security fence http://www.cbc.ca/cp/world/071026/w102668A.html just to be on the safe side as no terrorists could ever enter the US without going through Canada or Mexico.
Al Gore says that the world will erupt into flames like the end of a match stick by 2012. But he is not trying to scare anyone I'm sure. Iran poses no threat to anyone. When he says he will whipe Israel from the globe he is just being tricked into doing so by the Bushies. Move-On organization is a reputable organization with no political affiliation at all. The fact that Koyoto simply flattens out the economy of capatalist nations and boosts the economy of socialist countries is of no relavence to the arguement. We know this is all true because Move-On said so.

I haven't looked into this much, but from what i have gleaned, i have to say i am inclined to go with...errr...christ...JOE...on this one. Yes there are definate problems of a major scale due to our industrialised societies, but i think the global warming thing is completely hyped and is probably a major scam.
It would be nice if someone would actually show weather patterns over the last 2000 years or so. The one thing I think really affects local temperatures more than global warming is pavement. I know it sounds retarded, but with the amount of paving being done everywhere it is harder and harder for the suns warmth to reach the 'earth'. I dont believe it is on a cataclysmic level or nothing, but when you leave work on a hot summers day, notice how much heat the parking lot is putting off, back into the atmosphere. Then go find a nice field, of grass, and see how much cooler it 'seems' simply because the heat is being absorbed by the ground. This might sound like horse hockey, but it is why I am going to quit my day job and become a farmer of non-pesticide all organic farm goods. I would probably make more money anyway.
I think that is a reasonable approach. While it seems like a lot of pavement as a percentage of land mass it is not. However it should one would think have some effect. There is a blogger that has taken it upon himself to picture and document the conditions of the weather temperature stations and has compiled a lot of pictures and historical line graphs of data. Some stations that are improperly located show a massive temperature fluctuations right after one of usually two culprits. Either a pavement was put in right up to the location of the station, or an air conditioning unit was installed in close proximity to the station. Also he shows cars parked within a few feet, or more questionable practices like a trash burn barrel being placed within a few feet.
10000 years of weather patterns won't show what effect 6 billion humans, countless millions of cars and trucks, factories and burning fossil fuels as fast as we can get them out of the ground is having on todays climate because nowhere in our brief history has this happened. I really hope you are all right and the science is wrong, but I have noticed a definite change here in the weather.Yes we still get record cold days, record snowfalls and so on.We also are looking at the Northwest passage being opened to shipping in the summer, record high temps all over the world. I just don't think at the rate the world is industrializing and expanding that our current way of treating the planet is sustainable in the long run. What good will our economy be if more and more of our income is spent trying to keep your car running on outrageous oil prices and not spending it on crap made in China. There has to be a better way.If only the planets greed for more and more wealth by the chosen few was clawed back even a little and more was spent on changing our dependance on fossil fuels there would be more than enough for the whole of humanity to survive instead of what we have now. In my opinion there needs to be a fundamental change in the way people think about the way we live, not just in our own communities but on the planet as a whole. When I purchased my home 7 yrs ago heating oil was .38/liter and now it is .86/liter and climbing .I will be changing to an epa woodstove in the near future so that my money will be spent on other things istead of filling the oil companies pockets. It is little things that people can do that eventually will have an effect on these companies and will hopefully create real change. That is enough of a rant for now,I need to get of my high horse for awhile as I get dizzy from the height.
I am just looking at the weather cycles, so these 'record temps' that everyone is getting but us. Our hottest years were in the early 90s when we had over 30 days of plus 100 degree days. This past year, actual recorded heat (not by the thermo in my car) we hardly ever had any consequtive days over 100. The earth, and its environment go through cycles. Global warmning caused by caveman fires didnt stop the last ice age did it?
A lot of those are good points however they don't make people act responsibly. I have said before there are some well meaning people with the warming movement that inside know that there is no definable proof of the warming theory. However they are content to move along using Kyoto as a means to an end. Then there are the others that simply want to exploit Kyoto for personal gain. There is so much evidence that even more recently than before believed it was warmer then it is now by a good margin. One very compelling example is regarding the receding ice caps in the Swiss Alps and finding mining tunnels with tools handy and available ready for the next work crew. But the list goes on.
If it were not for Layla Kayleigh and her excellent interviewing skills I'm not sure I would have made it through the first part. Unfortunatly sitting on pins and needles waiting for that Basic Instinct moment to my dissipointment it never occured.
