Last Updated: 8:19AM BST 20 May 2009 Scientists say the revolutionary 'STAIR' (St Andrews Air) battery could now pave the way for a new generation of electric cars, laptops and mobile phones. The cells are charged in a traditional way but as power is used or 'discharged' an open mesh section of battery draws in oxygen from the surrounding air. This oxygen reacts with a porous carbon component inside the battery, which creates more energy and helps to continually 'charge' the cell as it is being discharged. By replacing the traditional chemical constituent, lithium cobalt oxide, with porous carbon and oxygen drawn from the air, the cell is much lighter than current batteries. And as the cycle of air helps re-charge the battery as it is used, it has a greater storage capacity than other similar-sized cells and can emit power up to 10 times longer. Professor Peter Bruce of the Chemistry Department at the University of St Andrews, said: "The benefits are it's much smaller and lighter so better for transporting small applications. "The size is also crucial for anyone trying to develop electric cars as they want to keep weight down as much as possible. "Storage is also important in the development of green power. You need to store electricity because wind and solar power is intermittent."
Don't worry. Anyone associated with this technology will be swiftly eradicated. Care to start a 'dead pool' on the originator of the HHO idea?
yeah, might be fun to start a dead pool, but hho isnt efficient enough to really make any difference yet.
Damn... I didn't even think... Imagine a Terminator-esque future, where the machines are fighting humans over their only available power resource - Oxygen! On an unrelated note, wonder what the by-product of this battery is..?
damn motil, now that really has me curious. What is the potential by-product? and is there really any way to have some fun with it? I already had some fun with HHO. you'd be surprised just how explosive a tiny amount of the gas is.
That's it. I'm moving to NM. They have all the fun out there. I bet you've dabbled in Tannerite, too, ain'tcha?
jesus, not yet, ive seen it, but now that you mentioned it, it looks kinda interesting. the most interesting exploding target i ever shot was a map gas cylynder made up like a bottle rocket. it did take off pretty good as well, but the tannerite targets look pretty cool. the ones ive seen in the stores look a little wimpy, but their website says otherwise. probably not a bad state to try to get a class 4 either
not yet, but its on my list. already have my dillion precision bench loader and some good dies. still need a tumbler and a few assorted items. also want to get a arbor press to load tracer rounds. yeah, lots of tools and toys on my list
