In the streets of Dujail, a Tigris River city of 84,000, people celebrated and burned pictures of their former tormentor as the verdict was read. I have no doubt you won't be seeing the pictures of film footage of this on CNN, ABC, NBC, or CBS. But that does not mean it really did not happen. At the same time I'm sure that Alqaeda has informed the networks where and when to have their cameras ready for a supposed protest though. What a shity world.
Don't take my word for it its common knowledge now and the celebrations did not violate the curfew. There were violators in Tikrit however they were Saddam sympathizers. A few thousand.
Yea, its all over yahoo, Fox, Cnn, and just about every other media outlet on the web. They need to execute quickly, just go ahead and get it over with....
But they can create chaos and make Bush look bad if they delay so the U.N. has already started the charge that hanging is inhumane
Yes, there are people celebrating. But a couple of points - first of all, just because it is a city of 84,000 doesn't mean that 84,000 people were out celebrating. Secondly, if it was the Americans getting kicked out of Iraq, ALL Iraqis (living in Iraq and those displaced around the world) - would be out celebrating. With exception of the Iranian backed ones, U.S./Zionist collaborators and maybe the Kurds in the north. (According to polls, over 70% want the Americans out). The U.S. couldn't have picked a more nationalistic, proud country to invade.
I think 100% of Americans want the Americans out, of course you pull out too fast things go back to the way they were. So we are there until the Iraqi government can stand on its own. Of course we will just move to Iran, so we will still be in the neighborhood.....
The hatred for the US may be only thing that unifies the Sunnis and Shi'ites. With US out of the way, a full-on civil war may ensue. Either way, I'd like our boys to be out of the crossfire when it goes down. Saddam's fate may cause quite a bipartisan frenzy.
Saddam verdict timing 'suspect' Former Foreign Secretary Malcolm Rifkind has accused the US of delaying the verdict in Saddam Hussein's trial to coincide with the mid-term polls. He told BBC One's Question Time he had no evidence but the timing of the verdict was "deeply suspect". The former president of Iraq was this week sentenced to death by hanging for crimes against humanity. The White House has dismissed similar accusations as "preposterous" and said the Iraqi judges determined the timing. Bloodshed warning It comes as Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak warned that hanging the former dictator could lead to further bloodshed in Iraq. Making the first public comments by an Arab leader on the sentence, Mr Mubarak said such a move would only enhance the country's sectarian and ethnic divisions. Tory MP Sir Malcolm said he believed the US told the Iraqi court to hold off until just before the US elections.
