For a blunt you empty a cigar of its tobacco and insert the weed. A joint you roll up in the papers.

 

Back in the day seems like the question wasn't how big the joint was but whether you could smell the stuff when it was rolled up in a plastic bag in your pocket and by how much crystalization you could see.
