The recent trend in reality TV "makeovers" makes me boil. I thing that they send a message that says - "If you are beautiful, rich, thin, and have big tits you will be overwhlemingly happy." Or the reverse " you are unhappy because you are ugly, etc."

Since when does being happy depend on externalthings like appearance? Since when does happiness rest in the hands of a plastic surgeon? Since the vast majority of people could not possibly afford these "makeovers", are they really just advertisements aimed at the rich?

I hate these shows. Is it just me?

No Bazza, they give me ulcers from frustrated rage if I watch them, hence the reason why I avoid watching 'some' TV like the plague.

I am sick of reality TV in general. MY wife doesn't understand why I won't sit in the living room with her at night. I finally told her I had enough of Trading Spaces, While you were out, and other lame ass reality TV she watches. How many fucking survivors do I have to watch before some Cannibal Pygmys eat the whole damn crew. I say Boycott the Shit. Blame it on the Jews they own the freaking Media.

These TV shows promote extremely low self-esteme for the "losers" and some get so depressed and contemplate suicide. How do i know? I have a friend who was in one of those shows and was classed as one of the "losers" and she went on a downward shame spiral after that. She lost so much weight her bones were sticking out (bit like mine do these days) and she was anti-depressant medication.

I hate people that judge purely on looks. To be honest my ex boyfriend was a very big guy and hardly what my friends called attractive. But I didn't care. He had a heart of gold and was funny as hell and very intelligent. OH and he was a master in bed!!

Let me just make a point about shows like The Swan. If tinseltown didn't make Karen Carpenter bodies and huge fake breasts the epitome of beauty, girls wouldn't grow up wanting lipo and plastic surgery. It's shoved down the throats of anyone who watches televison or thumbs through a magazine. It's pressure from so many places that cause these people to do what they do.

It's funny when you hear a guy say that looks aren't all that important and then that night pulls out his fake breast-filled porno mag and rubs one off.

    We're a fucked up society.

The only average people we see on reality tv are being told "what not to wear" or are getting an "extreme makeover".

Reality tv is about as real Donald Trump's hairline.

After three years of no cable tv, we just found out PBS comes in with no bunny ears or anything on top of the tv. So now my daughter watches some tv, but I watch it with her.

I agree society seems to have a superficial focus, but that doesn't mean we have to be superficial.

Amazing. A parent that still limits TV and spends quality time with their kid.

we are biologically designed to reproduce, hence our sex drive and urge for companionship. thats why we date, fuck, put on something attractive etc... plenty of studies have been done proving that men are usually attracted to a "type", a certain waist to hip ratio, large, bright eyes, full mouth larger forehead. men are designed to spread their seed, and choose woman who appear healthy and attractive to bear their offspring. women do the same. choosing men who are healthy, good providers and all that, and some of it is unconscious.

an average looking woman with brown hair, wearing an average looking outfit stood on a street and appeared to be lost. not one person asked if she needed directions. the next day, she wore blonde hair and wore the same outfit. Men stopped to help her, drew her maps and fell all over themselves trying to help.

my point is this; attractive people are treated better unconsciously by others. notice that babies smile at pretty women and ignore "unattractive" women? babies aren't trained by society yet, and even they respond to beauty. do you wear jewelry? make-up? like nice clothes? then you are also adorning your body to make yourself attractive. if my nose was like a giant hook you better believe i'd want a nose-job too. It's shows like the Swan that go overboard. We see them as vain, weak and self-absorbed. The downside to all this surgery is that once they have been perfected, we aren't able to see their true genetic disposition, then get tricked into procreating with them. Same thing with sick people who under normal cirumstances can't reproduce. Nature is trying to weed out the undesirable's and the weak genes. I should have died at birth, then died a couple weeks after that from a infection I had. Then I should have died again from several other health catastrophes but science has kept me alive. My genetic material is fucked. I should not reproduce. But with a lot of doctoring, I probably could. That's fucked. The people who are going to be dominating this planet in the future aren't going to be people with good genes. It is going to be people who have money. So we are going to get uglier and uglier and have more and more surgery.

That is kind of a self depreciating way to say things, but you do have a good point. If there is any truth to natural selection, modern medicine is sure going to throw a wrench in it.

Nicely written piece by the way.

I'm not convinced. Rat, you seem super smart to me and I think you're going to excel in your field. What I'm trying to say is despite any genetic faults you are able to succeed in life and contribute to the general well being of society.

    PS Smart girls are sexy.

well aint that sweet! thanks man. that made my day.
let me clarify though. i dont think someone who is genetically "faulty" is a complete waste of 0xygen. for my particular situation i think it's best not to reproduce due to several auto-immune disorders i possess that are genetically passed on. i think its selfish to bring another human being into the world that will most likely have a lifetime of illness and suffering. so sure, i may be able to reproduce, but should i really do that? i think not. besides, i hate kids. i am 32 years old and still have not finished school due to my problems. i hope to eventually persevere, have a fulfilling career and be financially independent. it is a lot harder for me than someone who is healthy. i've already had to drop the nursing courses twice now, and they wont re-admitt me if i drop again. do it or die tryin' i suppose.

so enough about moi. i can understand why people want to fix physical defects. the media constantly pounds unreachable ideals into our brains, thus "The Swan". i can understand a nose job or an eyelift. but people who feel the need to completely revamp their entire body have a much bigger problem than their looks. their self-esteem is obviously in the shitter. if i was told my whole life that i was ugly and therefore worthless, perhaps my self-esteem would be so low that i would consider the show as well. people who are ugly aren't completely worthless. this is really basic stuff here. not taking genius to figure out. my mom always tells me i look great, even when i am fat. my dad tells me i am fat when i am. the truth hurts, but maybe i need to hear it. "You have a really pretty face, you should lose 10 pounds". Ugh. balance is the key. to everything it seems....
