I lived in northwest detroit for 25 years. I have lived outside the city in Michigan for the past year (gotta make money, detroit is an economic wasteland right now).

I've been to the Rouge plant and the old train station and the highland park plant. There are more interesting ruins downtown, some places are only half ruined and half in use.

If you want to come check it out, I have just a few suggestions for your trip:

GO DURING THE DAY

Stick to the main roads. Often the main road is safe and nice but just a block off of it is gangland.

Know exactly how to get to and from each place you are going. Research one way streets and the like before you leave for the place. YOU DO NOT WANT TO GET LOST NEAR MOST OF THESE BUILDINGS!.

Near the Masonic Temple (my favorite historical building, but then, I'm biased) there is a street called Cass. Avoid it like the plague. I'm not shitting you. There is still debris down there from the 1969 riots because no one will go clean it up.

Do not sleep in the city. I suggest Farmington Hills, exit 5 off of 696. I grew up there, it's a nice place and about 15-20 minutes from down town. Birmingham, Royal Oak, and Livonia are also nice places to stay.

Bring some nice clothes and eat at the Whitney downtown. Order the Lobster. The mashed potatoes alone are worth it. I also suggest the portabello(?) ravioli with pesto.
    [/list]

Don't let me scare you away. It's not that bad out here, in fact, some parts of Detroit are amazingly wealthy. It's just (and I think GAS will agree with me) you can find yourself in the wrong spot very easily if you get lost. I mean, there are places downtown where you can walk around at 2:00 AM with almost no problem. It's just that there are bad places very close to them and if you don't know the lines you might cross them. I guess it's like any city, just the "nice" places are smaller. You could really get your wig pushed back going near some (read "most") of those places.

    Fuck that place.

I guess I'll just get killed by thugs in Ohio.

I'm still waiting to go to Glenn Dale Hospital with Cheezedawg.

There's a reasonably safe ruin to go to in Northvill (North-West of Detroit) called the "Northville Tunnels" by the locals. There are a series of tunnels that were used to move crazy people from an old asylum to a more modern facility across the street. Tons of people hang out there and there is almost always some action but police presence is pretty steady so you have to stay out of sight or you will get a ticket.

    Check it out:

If you go to Philly I suggest the Mutter Museum and I hear the Eastern State Pen is a cool tour.

I would love to see other museums like the Mutter.

    Oh yes.

abandoned places This site is out of Belgium and I want to marry Henk van Rensbergen. (Notice he wears no wedding bands in his bio picture)

Urban Adventure.org Cool site I believe is out of Australia. (Just keep checking the UE ring for more, I haven't been to them all...yet)

The Midnight Society This site is cool as hell. Features a lot of places in NJ and even The Eastern State Penitentiary (mentioned above).

Abandoned Asylum Focuses on abandoned mental hospitals throughout the US.

Dark Passage Another cool site out of New York.

    Here's a few...for now.
