it sux. i hate windows XP, but then again, i had windows 98SE and ME, and they all failed on me, too its time for ANOTHER factory reinstallation. i have to back up about 20GB of saved media, progs, pics, and shit. i think i abuse my computer
I think I abuse your computer alot more than you do... enjoy the format... and enjoy the format next month, and the one after that...

it can work fine, but then explorer.exe messes up and it goes all slow. then i try to restart and it takes forever and then a windo appears saying that explorer.exe isnt responding. Plus, when i go to add/remove programs and try to mess with windows components, it wont open and an error message appears saying that a program or file failed to load. Support told me to do a reinstallation to fix this...i just have to back up everything first.
Well I don't know much about XP, but I know that the home edition is based on the Windows NT core so it's not likely to bluescreen. If this is happening every few weeks or months though, before you reinstall open the case and remove your memory and vacuum the dust out from inside your DIMM modules (Just incase: "The slot where your memory card goes") because in most computers the fan covering the processor blows dust directly into the little holes along the sides and can corrupt data between read/write operations to memory, even during installation which may be why you have files missing. If that don't work I'm fucked if I know.

quote:
Originally posted by canine_STD: Why are you going for a factory reinstallation? Just do it yourself!

LOL! i will dust the inside of my comp with compressed air later. Factory reinstallation is when you insert CDs that delete your hard drive and set the data and progs up just as they were when you first purchased the PC, just as it came from the factory. sorry, i should have used reformat instead of factory reinstallation.
Well that's your problem! If you're the type of user who needs a walk through, retard orientated recovery disk, you're bound to fuck it up.
actually, i recommend ( and use myself ) the use of fdisk to split your primary disk up into 2 chunks, say 3-4gb for the windows drive 'C:' and the other 16gb or so for all your stuff on 'D:' then all you have to do is format the windows drive, not the other, keep your win xp setup files on this 'stuff' drive too..
Yeah but she installs by a recovery disk which will just delete all partitions and format the whole disk. What she needs is a copy of a normal XP disk and to fdisk and format as she pleases.
holy shit...whut? the factory reinstallation CDs just reformat the drives - deleting everything and restoring it to the way it was when i first got it. when it finished, all drivers and everything will installed and working. all i would have to do is install all my progs, DSL, update, and copy my media onto hard drive. there is no Windows XP CD, its just the manufacturer's CDs for the computer with its hardware. I should have made a back up CD so that this problem could have been fixed right after it started, but i add and remove programs almost every time i use my computer. i think the configurations for the new programs will be lost. i think its better this way... but i will try something different this time around...

quote:
Originally moaned kitana: i hate windows XP...i had windows 98SE and ME, and they all failed on me, too

I think you're ready for Linux
maybe...i am tempted to try it, but i see that alot of drivers aren't linux compatible... and then there the progs that aren't compatible with explorer 6.0, you have to have 5.5 or lower...and then Windows XP... why cant they all just be compatible with each other?

quote:
Originally posted by Disorder: then you will just have to code one for your specific hardware and recompile the kernel, wont you!!

kernel???
do you know what a crash is? I assume you do, you have used microsoft software for quite some time.. and every so often kernel32 will crash.. if microsoft never wrote windows, then the world would never know the meaning of the words 'freeze', 'access violation' and 'general protection fault'.. The words 'linux' and 'stopped responding' go together like oil and water. Linux has the stability of the great wall of china, windows has the stability of a small tent in a chinese shanty town, you get it? So we can assume both operating systems have whats called a kernel. Its just that the linux kernel has more advanced features(because it is a more advanced OS) as in you can add your hardware drivers directly into it and recompile, thus boosting your loading speed.. another example: windows comes with everything so it will work with everything, in linux i could say 'well i dont have a SCSI drive..' so i could disable the SCSI driver and free up about 350k of memory. Linux is handy, its fast and it seldom crashes. But how do i get linux to work with my hardware? Well, for a start most hardware manufacturers have Linux drivers in thier download sections. In other circumstances you may have to post a question in Linux related forums and see what they say.. but its not that likely.. When you have finally installed it, you may want something a little more user friendly, so type STARTX at the prompt and press enter, then, depending on your particular distribution, a nice windows-like GUI will be yours to stare in awe at..
Or if that's too much trouble, you could always try Lindows, I haven't a clue how good it is but they promise the earth in a box with a pretty pink ribbon.
