Damn, so winter time has come around once again and i had to search for a job once again. this time around i chose something that should work well for me. this year i am a snowboard instructor on a pretty good mountain. just like any other place you do on occasion run into things that are amazingly stupid, and even things that you see at all your other jobs or occupations, bad communication, things of that nature. however, i cant even really call this a job since i work at such a beautiful place and get to ride as much as i can. The few things that i do however find to be troublesome is that local business isnt doing its job renting to tourists. and then the tourists themselves need someone to hold their hands through the entire process. When i teach a lesson i go through the parts of the board and how it works. before i even have students strap into their boards i ask them all if they have their boards setup correctly, which is something that should take place at the rental shops. by being setup correctly, i mean by whcih way their feel and bindings are orientated on the board. it makes a huge difference when you learn how to ride. if someone doesnt know which foot should go forward, it is the rental establishments job to help the customer figure out which it is, and then mount the bindings approriately for each customer. This just isnt happening at all. some rental shops here are doing even less than that and dont even bother to maintain and tune the equipment, so the customers who rent from those places arent getting the equipment they need to have the wonderful time they expect to have for all the money they threw down on their vacation. So when it comes time for me to ask, some people have no clue if their equipment is setup right. that isnt a problem, i can help them out with that. when they answer yes that it is right just to avoid speaking up because they are unsure, it makes my day shitty when they decide to turn around and complain that i didnt help them out because they didnt speak up about it, and instead decided not to get the information and help they really needed. wioth the shops not doing their job, it makes things really difficult if i have 18 students in a session and not a single one of them is setup right, or they are unsure. it makes things difficult for me to have to go and resetup 12 boards out of a group of 18 people. after i spend time trying to get them on the right track, then i have only a limited amount of time to teach them the necessary skills to be able to get around safely. its not fair to any of my students to have to take 30 minutes ouy of their hour and a half session just to make corrections that the rental shops should have done before the students even made their way to me. Yeah, i could take the atitude that i dont give a shit , but i do. i know if any of my students ended up makeing their way around on the slopes without all the basic training, and hurt someone out on the mountain, then i would know that it would be partially my fault for not giving them the know-how that they needed. I know blame would lie on the person that caused the crash, but i wouldnt want anyone to get hurt on the mountain, especially if it isnt necessary.
What you are complaining about would take a grand total of 2 minutes to explain properly. I know it'll be rough but just suck it up and do it.
Yeah, explaining it is the easy part, and it only takes 1 minute. It actually takes about 4 minutes to change a set of bindings on the slope, and thats if they are easy to setup. mulitply that by 5 and thats just 20 minutes out of a lesson.often there are more than that in a group session that arent setup correctly, or just dont know. try doing that when its busy and shit barely gets done. i put a little thought to it, and im not going to visit every rental shop in town and tell them to get their shit together. it just isnt going to happen, and i cant expect a tourist to carry a screwdriver to take care of it themselves.one lady decided not to speak up, she instead nodded yes to say she had her equipment setup correctly. in the end after the lesson she decided to make a complaint that she didnt learn anything from the lesson. Now in order to avoid that from happening, ill have to hold everyones hand through the entire process. The whole thing was just a reminder that many people need that to happen, because they just wont speak up for themselves, or arent capable of doing so in a group setting. There are maybe even other reasons, but in any case now ill have to carry a small toolbag with to acomodate everyone. i just need to remind myself sometimes that people dont do what they need to in order to appropriately accomplish a task.
Awsome job seems to me there is an oppertunity. I guess the pro shop on that slope pretty much has a monopoly?
well joe, not really any monoploy, they are however the only one on the mountain. its a 12 mile drive to the base of the area, and ita a drive up a volcano to get to the base. pretty steep and scary. its operated by a tribe of apache indians so there is only one shop up there. there are several shops areound town at the bottom of the mountain, but not a lot of them do proper maintaince on their equipment. A lot of the time boards are just tossed into someones hands and not even really setup for the individual.i now carry a screwdriver on hand so i can flip bindings around and make changes when needed. not really a safe thing to carry with me. i put it in a sleeve pocket in my jacket so i can have it on hand. i do worry that if i fall in just the right or wrong way ill end up with that phillips stuck in my arm. looking up at better things though i have started to shoot video at the mountain for video analysis on instructors so they can see how they ride, as well as shooting some of the ski and board races too. doesnt pay the best, but it is a few more dollars in my pocket. im just hoping my equipment doesnt continue to fall apart.
My brother was telling me of a good place to ski closer to Dallas on an Indian reservation but something about being in the middle of knowhere or not many hotel options I bet it was the same place. He said the Indians ran it.
yeah, its probably the same place Joe lol. its really not all too bad . the snow is great this year and its been lots of fun up there.
