I found a grackle today in the road on it's back, alive. I put it in a box and kept it a few hours until the emergency vet opened up. They took it and said it looked like it had head trauma. I left it there and they probably killed it.

Now I'm bummed and feel like I should have kept it and tried to help it. It's leg was definitely fucked up and it couldn't fly. I hate that I couldn't immediately help it, so the idea I was kicking around yesterday about being a vet tech is now in full swing. The problem is that I want to work with wild animals in a refuge and not in a dog/cat setting, but we don't have any around here, so I don't know what to do. The schools around here also don't offer the right classes to get a degree.

So I am probably screwed and would have to move and I can't move. :frown:

Shit, I guess there is probably a big difference between vet tech and wildlife rehabilitation. That's what I would want to do.

well the thing about ANY wildlife refuge is - NO MONEY. they either have very little funding if it is Government ran... others depend on donations.. The arab gets letters and emails begging him to VOLUNTEER one day a month .

A few years ago my sister saved a nest of Hawks.... we called all the wildlife places... none would call us back. Then 2 weeks later someone from one them called and said we could drive them 168 miles to so place. they were dead

We managed to keep them alive for 3 and 8 days... was hard to feed so often.

I myself would HATE to work with wildlife. more risk of bites, scratches, rabies, ticks, fleas, mites... and you dont get the reward of kisses like you do from dogs & cats

Yeah, you are right. Fuck. If I won the lottery, I would open one.

I just want to learn to set wings and legs and junk like that.

The best job for me would be the person that cleans up roadkill. I have wanted to do that for years.

In case anyone doesn't know what a grackle is:

Cool looking birds. I think they are mean to other birds though. This one was very docile and didn't pick or act aggressive when you had to handle it.

my sister saved a baby blue Jay ...he is now old enough to fly around and be on his own... but he still comes to my sister and asks for worms. even after being away for 5 days, he remembered her.

I have movies of him growing up - I have a lotta movies I need to convert and put up.
