Personally, I think that would be a shame. Anything that could give a sense that racism is any less of a problem than it ever has been, or anything that might give whites an excuse to say that America's racial divisions are waning could be catastrophic for very important social programs like affirmative-action and welfare. Sen. Obama's success and rapid political rise give us faith that America is truly becoming a country where all men (and women) are treated equally. Regardless of the outcome in November, one unanticipated outcome of Sen. Obama's achievement is that it undoubtedly will be seen as the turning point when white America's sense of obligation to African-Americans ended. It will be remembered as the time when white America absolved itself of having any further emotional guilt or financial responsibility for either the sins of the past or the need for any further race-specific reparations. The promissory note that Dr. King once argued was due to African-Americans and stamped "insufficient funds" now will be viewed by the American people as cashed and paid in full. After all, it will be difficult for white Americans and others to continue to see African-Americans as deserving of special treatment stemming from historical claims when a black man may become leader of the free world. This turn of events should not be surprising. California has legislation that bars the consideration of race or ethnicity in hiring decisions or academic admissions. Across the nation, many colleges and universities have been steadily moving away from the consideration of race and ethnicity as admission criteria to favor race-neutral criteria such as income; and other kinds of affirmative action programs are being phased out as well. Consistent with this trend, Sen. Obama's campaign has emphasized class solutions that would help all, rather than race-specific remedies. African-Americans, however, continue to have a different collective experience than white Americans: > African-American infants remain twice as likely as white infants to die before their first birthday. > White ex-offenders are more likely to be hired than African-American high school graduates. > African-American renters with identical socioeconomic profiles to white renters are less likely to get an apartment, and those with black-sounding names are less likely to get job interviews or the job. > Half of all African-American boys drop out of high school, and 42 percent of all black boys have failed an entire grade at least once. > The poverty rate of African-Americans is 24 percent, compared with 8 percent for white Americans. > AIDS accounts for one in three deaths among black men 25 to 44 years of age. AIDS is the leading cause of death of black women. And black children have the highest incidence of AIDS compared to any other children. > African-Americans are 13 percent of the population and yet black men are 49 percent of this nation's murder victims and 41 percent of its prison population. As African-Americans join the celebration of what Obama's achievement means for racial equality in America, we must not lose sight that collectively we remain an endangered species. It's pretty simple. It is obvious that African Americans are oppressed and that white Americans are responsible. If you take away that perception of responsibility, whites are let off the hook. Nothing will ever exonerate whites from their obligation to help advance African Americans in Amereica and, if Obama is elected, whites might feel like the job is done. White Americans must not ever forget that they need to constantly help African Americans and to make up for the past injustices. Blacks are the only ones who are qualified to say when enough is enough and, obviously electing a black President is not enough. Whites have many many things to make up for and that should not end just because a black man is elected to the position of the leader of the free World. In fact, monetary reparations should not be taken out of the equation. White Americans owe this to African Americans, regardless of whether they're from Jamaica, the Dominican Republic or wherever. Black is black and having a family history of slavery is not the point. Dark skin means that white people owe you something. That is the fact. Whites have it easy in America and they need to recognize this and to live up to their obligations to black Americans.

I think that blacks need to take responsibility for their own miserable lives. Time to stop blaming whitey for every bad thing that happens to them. I have many black friends and acquaintances that have good jobs, houses, nice cars, and don't blame anyone for anything ('cept W for being an idiot). Correction, affirmative action refers to the practice of breaking a TIE in the scores by affirming the minority candidate, rather than the majority applicant. Jobs to not go to unqualified people, unless the hiring manager is a doofus.
That may be your vision but in reality it actually runs the way I wrote it fish. There have been numerous studies and reports on affirmative action and it's not for breaking ties
I am with bullgod on this one, Monsanto has strict hiring practices and actually gives bonuses to plant managers/supervisors that hire minorities. Case in point. When I was in IT there we had 4 team members, all white males. I was offered more money at NS and jumped, the IT Director later took a position with the Corporate audit group. He had several degrees, including his Masters, and umpteen years experience in the field. He knew his shit. His replacement - an african american woman, with no degree, and only 4 years 'IT' experience from the military. They hired her over more qualified, way fucking more qualified, applicants. Then paid her a retarded salary. And monsanto gets a minority credit. Sweet. That is bullshit. I am so glad I left that fucked up devil company.
