I dont know about the biochemical, but bugs will eat aspartame, plus it is generated from a microbial bug that is fed sugar. It makes L-Phe, add a little aspartic acid and wal-lah aspartame. I used to work for the largest producer of aspartame in the world. There was many precautions take to keep bugs, and birds from getting into the process areas. I dont know if it was the sweet stuff, or the bi-product.
