I got a parking ticket in February, 2007, from the town of Norfolk, Virgina. The ticket was $15.00, but by the time it found it's way to me it was $85.00 with court costs and late fees. Here is the problem - I have never driven in Virginia, and I didn't own the car that was ticketed. I actually donated the car to a Hurricane Katrina family in 2006. I gave it to a charity, they passed it on, etc. Evidently the tag didn't get removed. Anyway, I send a nice copy of the donation receipt and an explaination letter to Norfolk. They send me back a nasty letter saying that they set a court date and that I failed to appear. No Kidding. I called and talked to a person in the magistrates office, they say, "oh no problem, send it again and we will fix it." Then they send me a letter that they have issued a warrant for my arrest- for a $15 parking ticket. Anyway, does anyone know if Virginai and Alabama have an extridition agreement? I am inclined to appeal and ask for a jury trial, but the warrant has me a little afraid to show up. Any one have a idea?
Have you tried talking to the specific person on the phone and then sending it directly to them as in Attention: so and so. Get the persons number and call them back verify that they got it or fax it directly to that person a couple of seconds after talking to that person on the phone and asking them to fax back a copy of whatever it is that shows you have been cleared. These people are adminstrative types and that is their job and if you have their name they are accountable and they know it and will then get the job done right.
Barry you hardened criminal, Virgina is sooo going to pay the $1000 to extradite you to Virgina you parking ticket bandit you. Come on, don't be ridiculous.
As far as going to court and getting arrested in the process of trying to fix something I don't think that happens. I think I remember paying off some fine and the court officer or whatever told me to keep the reciept or whatever it was as proof I had taken care of it in case the processing had not gone through and I was stopped by police for something else.
I am not kidding about this. Of course they won't really extridite me, but there is a real warrant. I can't believe the bungling. They have all my documentation, but the judge simply refuses to accept it. Her logic is that it's my car with my tag on it period. They actually suggested (in writing) that I demand that that thge charity reimburse my expense. It's all a big joke to me at this point. I am thinking of writing their local paper and see if I can embarrass someone. How would you like to be the Judge that demanded a Charity pay a parking fine for some poor New Orleans Katrina victim who lost everything? Should make good reading. NO Kidding.
so what? I know nigga with warrants for multiple aggravated rapes, that live 3 doors down from the police station, and they never get caught. I would make a big mockery of this too, and also sue the judge and donate the winnings to the said charity
Maybe it's becuase you didn't do this http://www.dmv.org/al-alabama/registration-faqs.php : Do I keep my license plate when I sell my car? No. Since January 1998, the license plates stay with the person who purchased the vehicle and can be tranferred to another vehicle. The state transfer fee is only $1.25, but some counties have instituted a local issuance fee of $5 or more, so check with your local tag office.
I wonder what happens if the guy driving your car hits a pedestrian or a ferrari or gets a DUI? I would be making sure those tags are linked back to you more than worrying about 85$.
In Georgia, if a bench warrant is issued for you for missing a court date, and you show up, you will be processed. The courts here are very strict about stuff like showing up for your court date. And you better dress appropriately. The judge will kick you out, then issue a bench warrant...
I did make a mistake of not keeping the tag. So, technically I own the TAG that was illegally parked. The problem for them is that they say the CAR was illegally parked. Dan is right about the tags though. I think I'll call Monday and report them stolen.
that i would do barry, they obviously must be out of date, and they can't get them renewed, and they have had plenty of time since Katrina to get they swapped out. So they will have like 5 charges if they get popped driving on those tags.
It's rumored that at Norfolk high School, the cheerleaders are very puritanical. They're famous for chanting, "We don't drink! We don't smoke! Nor folk! Nor folk!" They're going to use the Taser on you for sure.
