The Mardi Gras revellers have again dragged into my office hung over from their night of debauchery in anticipation of giving it up for Lent. I gave up what I always give up for Lent: Catholicism.
I don't know if "Bible Basher" is apropos. Assuming that term is the same as "Bible Thumper", as we say here. I do regularly attend church and consider myself a Christian (Barry has some issues with that term) but I may not be "thumper" worthy. I don't have a platform here to spread the gospel. Fugly is a mind dump for me. I believe in God but I don't judge here. I don't ask that anyone believe (or even accept) what I believe. Except to be a smartass, I mostly stay off of the Cold Sober forum. I'm not here to "save" or "convert" anyone on this forum. Some consider that a virtue, others a fault. I'm not holier than thou. I only bring things like this up when asked and then because I'd be more ashamed to deny my religion than to reveal it.
Umm, I used to be a Bible Basher. I am just a Born Again, Tongue Talking, Jesus Freak at the moment. I love God, but am a little skeptical of the modern day voodoo cults know as "Church." If you want to know why, PM me and I'll tell you the story. In my opinion, Mardi Gras is evil. I don't do it. The Evil part is that rich snobby people ride through town abd throw trinkets and baubles to poor people. Then they go to invitation only parties in tux and gown. Southern Pompous Aristocrisy - That's what I see. Maybe it is a little more than that today, but that is the root of it.
You left out the part where the poor flash their saggy titties at the rich. Cause the hot chicks get thrown invitations to the party later......
i've been having the most difficult time trying to explain to my children why we don't celebrate mardi gras. we seem to be outcasts in this town because we don't shut down for the whole week... why must you give 'evil' the power of a capital E? it's like you're giving it it's own mind or something.. surely you don't believe it's that powerful?
Capital letters are powerful. I capitalized Evil because I believe it is an spiritual being, not a just a subjective feeling. The term "evil" in lower case is used to denote "damage done to oneself" by an action. The capital "Evil" denotes harm done to others by those being influenced by a "higher power". To me anyway. BARRY
I've been to a couple of parades (on the Eastern Shore only - you'd have to live here to know what that means) because my kids like the floats. Crawling around for trinkets and moonpies cast by the rich seems sad to me and I can't really get into it. But I haven't really tried to. People say I'd like NASCAR if I tried it. That's why I don't try crack, folks. I don't want to like it.
I have a problem with any kind of organised religion theres to much hypocrisy for me to every think of following any kind of religion, and i find the idea of an all powerfull being ludicrous never mind worshipping it. If i have to believe in a superhuman being i pick superman cos he's much cooler.
Disorder 4:19 '..and blessed was He, bearer of red cape and underpants external, for he knew that only a short passage would sufice in the interception of the passenger angel and the passengers rejoiced at his coming, for he was their savior and the messenger guides bestowed him honour, raising him upon a pedestal of truth so that his name and his deeds be known to all.' Amen
very nice, BARRY... but i guess the way my pagan mama raised me is that nothing - and no one - has power unless you give it to them. and the gift of power should be given with extreme caution. it would have never occurred to me to capitalize evil.. but then again would i have capitalized something great and holy like 'love'? probably not - i don't even capitalize me and i am ALL POWERFUL.
I toltally agree that nothing has power unless you give it to them. My concern is that the acts of elitist snobbery that permeate the mystic's parades ARE forms of empowing the negative side of thiongs. In other words, do I have to say to a crack pipe that it has power over me, or is the physical act of using it enough to give it power? Since I think that action speaks louder than words, maybe actions can be permission for something to have power over you. This feeling I have goes to the Freemasons and Shriners as well. Same dynamic. Same evil. Remind me to tell you the story of the Shadow sometime. Shadows don't lie.
