I've got one PC that had 2000 when I got it, since then, I've put XP SP2 on it, and I'd like to delete win2k from it altogether. Also, I'd like to install a copy of 98SE on it because there's a certain program I like to use that only runs on ME and previous fat32 OS's... is this possible?
The latest PC I have dual booted XP and 98 on is the one I'm typing on right now. Drivers were not easy; the memory management in 98 does not take advantage of the hardware at all. It is however convenient to have a different partition to boot to and access the NT partition if need be. Or still have internet access on another o/s if XP crashes hard. If I remember correctly (been a few years now) I used FDISK to load 98 onto the primary of Four partitions after loading 98 and all of its drivers. I booted to the XP cd and loaded XP on the D: partition. You need to decide if you want to loads it NTFS or Fat. I wish blackviper.com was still around he had good info on loading Xp if I remember correct I believe he had the script to load into the XP boot.ini file so 98 will show on the boot menu. Plus at the time he was the only person with a detailed and comprehensive list of the XP services.
This may sound a little odd. Go to vmware.com download the free vmplayer. Then you can download the free vmdks all over the internet. They even have an OSX one. You can run as many virtual machines as your hardware can support. You can run Red Hat, Mac OS, Win98 or whatever the hell you want. If you have the space, keep the original vmdk somewhere safe, like on a DVD, then you can hack the shit out of the one on the box, and if you kill it, just copy it back from the DVD. We use the VMServer at work and currently run 8 servers on one Quad Dual Core Intel server. We are going to end up with about 15 running on it at once. Running Server 03 as the Hardware OS. If you got the extra scratch, they make a product called ESX Server. It actually interacts with the hardware directly and doesnt need a host OS. There is a web front end that you can access from a different PC. It is an awesome tool that is going to take us from 60 physical servers down to about 11. They make a tool, called V motion, that allows you to copy a vm to another physical box, you can then edit the original, say to install an update, the users follow the server to the copied version, without any down time. Then once the upgrade is done, you can shut down the copied server and all the users never see a change. It is the balls out best tool I have seen in a long fucking time.
Oh and you should be able to boot to a Win98 DOS floppy and use FDISK to remove one of the partitions. Just make sure you have the right one before you delete it. LOL. Should be under 'non-DOS' partitions. NTFS is usually the format of the file system.
I've had a couple drinks so far... I'm trying my best to not read this thread tonight... It's times like tonight when I really fuck shit up on the computer...
