I thought my childhood was interesting. I wish I grew up where you guys did. Although we had our share of chemicals and explosives. No purse though. The quarter and the superglue was about as extreme as I got.
I lived so many different places growing up, but I think the best time I had as a kid was upstate New York. Stationed at Plattsburgh Air Force Base. I was around 11 or so. There was no where in that town that you could not walk to. We lived right next to Lake Champlain, and of course we were told not to go near it, but we were on the lake everyday. In the summer we'd tube down the river, from the dam to the opening into the lake. We'd build makeshift boats out of anything we could find. In the winter we'd see how far we could walk out on the lake before it started cracking. Yeah, that was stupid, but it was fun at the time. Probably the best three years i'd spent in one place. Other than that, we lived in no one place more than 2 years at a time, so I hated being a kid, changing schools, moving from friends, etc... I don't miss being a kid at all.
I was born in 1959. Different world than now. I can remember when a "lap top" was an Etch-A-Sketch. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Etch-A-Sketch Barry
Air Force Brat huh, At least you where never stuck at Lackland twice once as a kid here then for my entire time in the Air Force.
Marine Brat. We were stationed at Camp Pendleton, CA, Camp LeJeune, NC, Redstone Aresenal, AL then my parents got divorced and my mom still had a thing for military men. So it was an Air Force guy in Plattsburgh, then another who was from Michigan, then eventually back to Redstone. Somewhere in the middle of all that, I was born in Alabama, my middle brother was born in NC and my youngest brother was born in NY. I keep telling myself I won't move anymore, but I moved here 3 years ago, and i'm contemplating another move... Maybe it's just in my blood. Good thing the aspirin dropping isn't.
I know the feeling. We where all over the damn place too. I think here in Arkansas is the longest I have ever stayed anywhere. After a few moves you don't even bother trying to make friends anymore.
I was an awkward child. Big blue plastic frame glasses, a retainer, pudgy, everyone wanted to be MY friend...
Yeah, abandonment issues, fat kid trauma, slightly obsessive compulsive, i've got a shitload of baggage. Want a date?
Barry said... I had an etch-a-sketch as a kid. I also had a Rubik's Cube, still have 3 Rubik's cubes actually. 3 of the regular ones, and a 4x4x4. Ferine said... Why not, they say you marry a woman just like your mother.
Camp Lejeune, pretty close to Jacksonville I think? Yeah, we lived there right around the time some drycleaning business was dumping PCE into the water supply. Since my brother was born there we got a letter years later asking if he'd grown a third eyeball or anything...
Born in Alabama Ferine? I guess you know where Muscle Shoals is? Well that’s where I was born. I have an Uncle who lives in Madison (outside of Huntsville) and an Aunt that works at Redstone. What years was you dad in the Corps?
Favorite childhood memory was my friend's sister, though. She would always come running out of the bathroom butt-naked after a shower if I was there and stand in the living room smiling her ass off. She was crazy and cute, and it was right after one of those moments that I laid my hands on some goods for my very first time. MMmm boy. I was a little asshole in my elementary. Me and this one kid Marshal were hanging out in the soccer field after class, and we saw this mud hole. It was right by the road, so we started slinging mud at passing cars. Eventually one of the ones we hit pulled into the school to tell someone. It was a PTA member, and we got dragged off by our ear lobes. Damn, every time we'd get detention we'd have to sit out for 10 minutes during our 30-minute recess, and mine was always 20. We had this one pussy ass christopher hopkins who was always crying. I remember seeing him run out for recess one time, and even while there were still kids running out, he came running back in. I caught the teacher tell the other teacher, "What a whiny ass..." then she remembered I was sitting right there. I knew what was up, but said "Hell yeah." I didn't have to sit out anymore, but I still had detention.
I was born in Hunstville, yeah I know where Muscle Shoals is. We lived in Madison as well when we moved back to AL the last time. I'm not sure when he went in, but he got out in 83 and was a First Sergeant, whatever that means.
First Sergeant, I bet his troops called him Top. So your mid 30's then? That’s weird I would have never thought cause you look younger. Of course i may be assuming to much and off by quite a bit. I was in the Marine Corps but went in after he got out. Of the four branches the Marines are soooo much smaller that it’s surprising sometimes who you know.
I also miss big league chew. That stupid gum in a pouch, you'd put so much of it in your mouth during t-ball games you couldn't even chew it. That stuff was awesome, but I haven't seen it in years.
