No,no. Knowledge is gained from the internet. e.g. The Five (5) Basic Ways A Human Being Learns Pattern recognition. - (One of the first ways we learn anything!) Just about all professional educators recognize this one. Oh, they give it fancy names (terminology), and steep the whole thing in the stupidity of Freudian mysticism; but they all recognize this is one of the basic ways that we learn anything. One of the ways I use this fundamental technique in chess is to insure all my students first learn, ... "THE BASIC MATING PATTERNS." There are only 20-30 really basic checkmates. These basic patterns form the foundation for EVERYTHING that comes later. (See the book, "Basic Middle-Game Techniques," by ... International {Chess} Master / and Dr. Danny Kopec.) (More on this later!) Repetition. - (Not a favorite of modern educators, to say the least!) This is a fundamental technique to learning. It needs to be brought back into the mainstream of teaching and vastly improved. I have personally found this can be both fun and very educational. It does not have to be the bore we think. More on this later! Virtual cognition. - Fundamental understanding of certain ideas. Certain things do NOT have to be taught, they are instinctual. But there are correct methods for enhancing and bringing out an understanding of ideas that are placed deep within our brains before we are born. This is the one area most professional educators don't even understand, - and for the most part - have failed miserably in any attempt to craft this into an intelligent teaching tool. (A little more on this topic later. I primarily understand how this idea relates to chess ... how this method can be used in other teaching fields will be for someone else to discover.) Association. - Cross-referencing in the brain. Taking things (and ideas) an individual already knows and relating them in such a manner that that a learning process takes place. A very good idea - and one I have used when I have taught chess in the schools - is to take a very foreign or strange idea, and relate it to something the student already knows or understands. This is just PART of the process of association, not the whole idea! But it takes a very intelligent teacher, who can think fast on their feet, to be able to use this particular technique. (A LOT More on this later.) Themes. - (The "Building Block," or "Chaining" technique.) A lot of people will think this is the same as number four above, but it is not. I cannot be very eloquent outside of chess, so I will confine myself to area of knowledge that I am an expert in. First you lay the 'groundwork' of (a both a very simple AND a very complex) an ending, say a KNIGHT + BISHOP (and King) versus a lone King. First you insure that the basic student has a fairly good grasp of the basic ideas of this ending. (To really Master it can take years!!!) Then you begin to teach the student a "two-piece" combination. You show the aspiring player a whole series of relatively simple tactical sequences that are grouped together under a general heading of "Two or Three piece combinations." Then you expand this teaching thrust into the idea of using two or three piece attacks on the enemy King. (You are also using association now, the beginner will have to draw on the knowledge you have already taught him - or her! - and expand and draw that knowledge into a relatively new field.) Then you finish this whole conception by ending with several COMPLETE MASTER GAMES where these ideas are clearly evident. This entire process could take 20-30 lessons - or more!!!, you would have to gauge your speed on student's individual ability to learn - and perhaps a span of time of a six months to a year. I will be going into this "building block/chaining" learning technique in much more detail later on!
Another day, another year, another wasted few hours catching up at Fugly. well it seems ive not missed much, feel free to post a few thread links if i've missed owt. Seem's the forums have their own url now, we have a spellcheck (even if its fucked), "Sorry. We have temporarilly disabled the FuglyOrNot Uploader" and who's the bod in top left corner? just gonna c+p blog to let u catch up on me, what've the important ones of you been up2? if u aint been here a couple years u're not eligible i had me b'day on the 10th *insert glee here* *shrugs* still, at least i wasnt at work (y) twenty fucking seven now, ideal eh? inserts blog.... Well, only three months late, but im finally arsed to share my conquest of Scotland with ya. The whole idea from conception to back at home took 3 days. I mentioned off hand to a friend that we shud be doing something exciting with our spare time and it was decided, seeing as neather of us had climbed Nevis thats what we should do. I did a quick scout on the web to check it was viable and it looked like it was fairly safe to climb in early september. We continued drinking our tinnys and decided we'd leave 1st thing (7am) the following morning. we clubbed our funds and came up with £150 which we planned to be enough. we packed a couple of sleeping bags and some extra clothes into my recently aquired diesel pug 309 and set off nice and early. I had foolishly thought that he car would be ok as it had just been mot'd but we'll get to that later. The journey up was fairly uneventfull, we finally goto the foot of the ben about 7ish after stopping in a small garage just outside fort william to pick up some beer, some food and some water. As it was dark when we parked in the carpark we thought best idea was to drink the beers and face the mountain in the morning. I was somewhat suprised at the fuel consumption; it had cost me £70 just to get there! i'd been driving in ecoonomy mode too, i hadent been over 80mph throughout the trip. It had only cost me £80 hammering it up there in a 2.0l Rover 820!! After a fair quantity of tinnys i fell asleep, we had already rolled the seats back as far as they would go and were already in our bags so things seemed fine. i woke up in a form of drunken stupor around 3am feeling cold so i just started the car and went back to bed, this cost me at least another £5, probably more. i woke up again around 7am, car still running, feeling hot and sweaty...... doh! Mike woke up around the same time so we decided to get ready for our accent. i was wearing jeans, size12 steel toecap boots, a t-shirt, 2 hoodys and a coat. Mike was in para boots, jeans, tshirt, hoody and denim jacket. We strolled across the carpark to read the notices in the visitors centre (always cautious us), there was no severe weather warning although they did state, not to climb in denim lol. we decided seeing as we wernt climbing in flip-flops and sombreros, we'd probably be ok I brought me rucksack with our provisions in; a bag of yougurt coated penuts, a bag of haribo sour mix and 3 bottles of water. The notices say it shud take a fit person about 4 hours to climb up and 3 to climb back down so i figured we'd just get propper food when we came back down. I smoked a joint as we were getting ready and rolled a couple of single skins for the journey up. it was 7:30 and looked like we were the first off up the mountain, we could see other people following once we got higher but we didnt speak to them till after we were on our way back down. starngely the most common question was "how much further" It was a fairly demanding climb, ranging from quite steep to flatish. Theres a loch half way up and u get about a mile or so of easy terrain as the path runs alongside it. (the original path ignores it and goes stright up the mountain but there were conservation notices up to encourage you to take the long way round. It didnt really get cold till we'd been in the cloud cover for 20mins or so and we started to see patches of snow scattered about. Once we finally hit the summit we had a smoke in the emergency shelter then began to make our way down. when we'd stopped it did get cold quickly and neather one of us had been bright enough to bring gloves or a scarf. Well the journey up had only taken us just under 3 hours..... see how we get on on the way back down. Was harder going back down than i thought for, u had to be assured of ur footfalls, there was a nasty accident waiting to happen. saw a fair few people making their own way up, seems pretty popular. Was glad when we finally got back to the car, i wasent propper knackered but i did feel like id climbed a mountain. Only took us 2 hours down too, so we'd shaved 2 hours off a "fit" persons climb (Y) I felt i could still make it back down to devon if we gotr some real food in so after we'd changed and settled a bit in the car we went to find a chippie in fort william. The 1st chippie i went in obviously thought i was a tourist and tried to charge me £12 for cod n chips twice, i informed him casually i'd not be payaing that kinda price and went to the next chippie where things were a much more reasonable £8. Now the chips had left us seriously under budget for the trip home seeing as we had less than 1/4 tank fuel, £45ish in cash and over 300miles to travel. we figured that we'd just hope, afterall a mile closer to home is still a mile closer to home. i sunk the last of our cash into the tank in the same garage we'd got the supplies from the night before. then it was devon or bust. And bust it was, the car lost all power just outside lockerbie, i managed to freewheel of the motorway and most of the way around a rounabout before having to savage the car by moving it while its in gear with the ignition. it was hammering with rain so i wasent gonna get out an manually push it. luckily i had pseudo AA cover as long as i was someone else. the mechanic came out after 90mins or so and fixed it quickly; one of my injectors had sheared hence the loss of power. luckily he had a spare and swapped it over. all set to go woot Or not, when i fired it up he noticed a massive leak in my fuel line. he asked if it had been economical of late *slaps head* doh! he fixed that too and we were on the road again. from that point on we noticed fuel economy back in the relm it shud be with a diesel. As it turned out i cudnt manage to get all the way back in one go so we ending up sleeping in a motorway service station somewhere outside birmingham.luckily one the leak had been fixed we managed to get back on the fuel we had with some left over. savage tho eh? £70 on the way up £35 on the way back. still the car was fixed till i stoved it into the back of a shogun, but thats another story Well this post looks pretty epic, your lucky im remebering 3 months on, its had time to become abridged A New Year, A New Beginning Well here we are in 2006....im guessing just like everyone else i have things i wanna remember from 05 and things i wished i didnt but a new year is a new start. lets see how far i can get through 06 before i do summat stupid! Like many people i've made couple of resolutions this year, the most prominant being not to smoke gear anymore *gasp* so far ive had over 24hours of being in my own mind... its a scary place i guess the real test will be tommorow when i return to work, it used to be a habit of mine to get as muntered as possible before i went in to make the day float on by. Now im gonna have to cope with my mind numbing job straight! Obviously i could just get another job, but when i do try and justify it to meself, im thinking this job isnt THAT bad, i know i've worked worse and the cash is pretty good. Still theres a rumour floating about that we will be getting a memo on our return to the factory indicating that we will all be laid off in a month. I dunno what will happen, weather we will be laid off or its just the company coving themselves by giving us the notice "just in case". i guess thats why its a rumour. I guess in a month i'll know for sure and will be able to act accordingly. As sad as it seems, atm im looking fwd to going back, ive had 3 weeks holiday over chrimbo and now its starting to get a bit boring, im even writing in my blog lol. I know within a week of being back i'll be looking fwd to other holidays but as it stands now, i'd rather be at work. If im there, im earning money, not spending it! Next exciting day for me will be the 10th, my birthday. I'm staring to get propper old now, i mean 27, thats nearly dead innit? lol. It'll be a strange one tho, with my new reformed drinking habits im now at a compleate loss at how to celebrate it. Any ideas? Hmmmm, im sure i had more to say but seem to have run out of steam. Well if anyone has any cool ideas for b'day celebrations, leave a comment. Well what to do with the remainder of my last days holiday? i shud be out of the house i suppose.... well, back again, who knows how long, am on blagged wifi atm, didnt realise how easy it was to crack wep, i have 5 access's from home all wep decrypted see how long i can keep this up, im still gettin 5+gb downloads a day so although much under what u'd expect from ur own hookup, its free! if u got a wifi card/lappy i'd advice a little wardriving; its perfect for those controversial posts grab everything u need in a single bootable iso from here well thats me back...... epic u say????
Good to hear from you Bob, nice climb by the way. Am I too understand that we won't be havinga drinkoff anytime soon, or is it jsut the smokey you steer clear of right now?? PS That's my retarded face in the corner....
nah drink off's are fine (y), was just interested to find out if my recent lack of motivation was at all drug related; its been 2weeks with no smoke now and im still not motivated to do anything. gonna wait a month and if im still not arsed at least i know its me and not the drugs and can happily go back to 24/7 battered
Cannabis induced Amotivational Syndrome. 3-12 months to return to normal function. Enjoy the wait. http://www.druglibrary.org/schaffer/LIBRARY/slikker.htm Barry
Do you even read the articles or do you just google a topic and assume the article will support your view? First paragraph: Various studies were done to try to find "Amotivational Syndrome." Some claimed success. Others claimed that there was no such animal. But there was one trend: the more successful studies were done on young persons. This statement leads me to believe that any findings aren't going to be suppored by the numbers. The cited study used Rhesus monkees, a common but questionable subject. Human to monkey studies in general loose a lot in their translation.
Erm.. HEY EVERYBODY! Am feckin' back and all that shite. Whatchallbeenuptoo? Not that I give a flying monkey of a fuck. Still giving it the truth DocB, good on ya matey...
I read - 3rd paragraph supports. "Rhesus monkees are very similar to humans, though, and it is very likely, especially given the previous empirical evidence, that smoking marijuana during adolescense will temporarily impair specific types of motivational development. The effect is permanantly reversible and normal motivational development can be obtained by a 3-12 month period of abstinance (in monkeys -- no time period for humans is available.)" Lots of research out there to support the premise that chronic marijuania use causes motivational deterioration. Subjective evidence, such as the fact that wherever Marijuania grows wild, the populance lives in broken down shack or mud huts and are perfectly happy that way, also supports the theory.
Barry, I don't know what they taught you in college, but here, even in Utah, I was taught you can find research to support just about any statement out there. Furthermore, considering the four references the article provides; two of them are from neurological findings in rats and rheuses monkeys. Geneticly simularities aside, I'm affraid the differences in frontal lobes (for monkeys, rats don't really have that lobe) and brain structure aren't very comparable. This three paragraph, four sourced write up isn't doing much to convince me, but I freely admit my own bias, as I like to smoke the pot now and then. But it occurs to me you too have some pretty big anti-drug biases of your own prompting yer opinion.
