The little switch to the door was turned and now the door to my car wont close, how do I get it back to open position?

This may seem overly simplistic but I take it you allready tried pulling the handle?

If its the kind where there is a striker post on the car side and a sort of hook that catches it. Use a phillips screw driver to pull against it while pulling the handle at the same time.

Make sure the door is not locked while trying this.

Sounds like it's 'half-tripped' - like when you get a bag of shrooms and two hours later, you're wishing you had more.

Try manipulating the switch with the side of a large philips screwdriver, pushing it all the way in (or 'out' - towards the outside of the door.) It should click a second time, then pull on the door handle and see if it releases. If it's locked up, try spraying some PB Blast'r (or WD-40) on it, let it soak in, and try again after a few minutes.)

The hardest part about that whole solution was figuring out what that small little piece was called. I eventually figured it out, but thanks again guys. Wasn't even my fucking car was the thing.

It must have been one sweet 64 Impala. Did it have the fuzzy dice, or was it those dingle balls draped around the interior that made you want to steal it?

I bet it had one of them bumper dragging deals on it so it sparked. Prolly put your little bean heart into tachycardia.
