The fact of the matter is that the constitution was written in a far, far different time and sorely needs to be updated. End of story, there is no reason for the average joe to own a gun. If our friends overseas can manage it I'd like to think that we can too.

"Homicide rates tend to be related to firearm ownership levels. Everything else being equal, a reduction in the percentage of households owning firearms should occasion a drop in the homicide rate".

I was hoping that you wouldn't take offense to the spiderman wallet comment. :)

I don't like the idea of a bunch of armed people, but I think everyone has the right to bear arms.

Not having the right to own a gun is scary. Criminals will always have them and I think in these crazy days, we need to have the right even more.

I'm telling you. Norway is the place to be! It's peaceful there.

I'm actually surprised that you feel this way living in DC and having been robbed. I'd be a crazy gun-toting freak!

I would just be one more idiot running around with a lethal weapon then. I prefer to not add to the problem. To quote a hero of ours

"I wonder how you'd live your life without a gun, I know how I live my life because you got one!"

    Henry Rollins

And Henry refuses to carry a gun also, and he has had a far worse expierence/loss than most because of a armed criminal.

Sorry man I was just exaggerating or being facetious, not meaning to be taken altogether seriously. But I can see your logic I will see if Dwaine has some free time to train me on proper rifle and handgun use.

NOOOO!!! For the love of god don't let Dwaine train you at anything! It always ends up the same, the trainee wakes up tied to an old radiator in a damp cellar with a bucket of fisheads for nourishment. You can thank me later for the warning, now I have to find a place to hide from Dwaine for the next week.

I figured you were joking Joe, but there are a lot of people that actually feel that way, it's a bit disturbing.

I dont own any guns. I just dont care for them. Do I think banning guns is the answer? No. Then just the criminals would have them. I do think more should be done prior to ownership though. Classes and mental evaluations. One day someone might shoot michael moore with some bullets they got at KMART and it will be all KMARTs fault.

That is exactly right, the mental evals especially. And there needs to be far stiffer laws for people who are caught with guns that havn't gone through the proper procedures. And bullets should cost $500.00 each (I think Chris Rock said that in his standup). Then people would really think twice before shooting someone.

Here is where serious minded people get caught up in the illusion.

The problem is generally not a need for more rules. There are plenty of them however they are not properly enforced.

The kids at Columbine broke 17 gun laws.

There are some good hearted people in the anti-gun movement and then there are some stone cold radicals. In between there are the typical bunch many of which know very well that the enforcement is pathetic and always fail to mention that. The objective is to make it seem the solution is more laws up and to the point of total outlaw.

Every election cycle the Anti-gun radicals hype some dude up and set him loose to kill people at a mall or something. All to effect these type of debates.

The anti-gun lobby is a serious stone cold mean bunch of people. Who will stop at nothing and killing innocent people is small potatoes for them if they can get a headline out of it.

I doubt guns will never be outlawed in the US and they should not be. Every dictators rise to power started with banning the private ownership of firearms. The time in which the Constitution was written was different but the idea remains the same and valid.

The United States has approximately 20,000 gun laws in effect and our main problem is that we do not enforce them. Our DA's and courts like to go for the cheap victory with all this plea bargain crap to show high conviction rates. We as the citizens pay for that as criminals learn that they can continuously violate the law and (if caught) escape punishment with probation or a light sentence. I like old Henry but if he and others wish to allow their family to be at risk because they choose to live without a gun that is their decision, not mine and I do not look down on him because of it. One of my hero's; Suzanna Hupp suffered a great tragedy at the hands of a criminal. Her outlook is a bit different. Oh crap I'm wandering again, frankly I hope my family or anyone else never suffers a tragedy due to being unable to defend ourselves.
