Wow. I made a serious mistake today.
I took my Ritalin at lunch, forgot I took it, and took another about ten minutes later. About an hour later I get a headache, and my skin feels like bugs are crawling on it. I can't even blink my eyes they are so wide open.
Do people actually LIKE the high of amphetamines? I have some clients that crush and snort their meds. Does anybody really like the feeling of bugs crawling on them?
Amazing thing is that one pill doesn't do anything like that. It simply focuses me. No high or weird feeling. Two was a different story. Not fun.

Usual effective dose is 20-30 mg/day with a max of 60 mg. It's not adjusted for weight in my pharmacopoeia book. I guess whether you were taking the extended release or not could factor in. Possible side effects include fast heart rate, higher blood pressure, insomnia.

Describe your symptoms more. Are you getting a burning and tingling feeling in your feet bilaterally (both sides) or just one limb. Is is in a "glove and stocking patern". Is it just your feet or your feet and hands. How much do you weigh? Have you ever been checked for diabetes.

are you losing weight? are you drinking a lot of water? eating more but not gaining weight? Have to urinate often? What kind of medications are you on? Mother father brothers or sisters have any health problems? When you say numb do you mean like pins and needles or actually decreased sensation to touch?

It's not pins & Needles it's feels like they arn't getting any blood kind of numb. I just recently had a full work up due too a sinus infection I let go for way to long. The blood work and everything came back negative and the Cat & everything else was fine.
I don't get it myself either. During the day if I lay down to take a nap or something I fall asleep and stay asleep fine. But if I go to bed at night I feel my feet get numb then my hands then I will suddenly get this tingle rush thru my whole body and wake up and be very disoriented.
I found counting when I close my eyes helps me fall asleep with out the problems.

Well if you had problems with the arterial supply to your legs I would think you would have some claudication which is pain with exercise in your calf muscles if it or buttocks. It's not that I don't get it. I am asking those questions to rule in or rule out. It is a process that is always done when taking a history. I can't do a physical exam over the internet but I would have checked your pulses the pedal and posterior tibial arteries are the ones normally palpated in the feet. The posterior tibial is just behind your ankle about a fingers width. The pedal is just about in line but a little lateral to the tendon that runs to your big toes on the flat surface of the top of your foot. Have you ever had any heart problems or heart murmurs? Are you a smoker? Do you have any back problems like herniated disc, pinched nerves? What is your blood pressure? Check your fingernails next time and see if they are blue or pink like they should be. Also you can check your radial pulse which is on the side of your thumb right where your hand ends and your arm begins in the indentation lateral to the tendons. Anyway sounds like you might need to see a neurologist. The work up for a sinus infection if not directed toward the symptoms you are complaining doesn't help much unless they did some tests that might overlap. Maybe you need to see a neurologist. I haven't started any neurology training yet.
Michelle
05-03-2007, 09:28 PM
Also sometimes drugs can cause a neuropathy (effect the nerves) even if you think it feels like you aren't getting blood the symptom you get from an inadequate blood supply are derived from the effects on the nerve so you can't really say one way or the other whether it is the blood supply effecting the nerve or another type of neuropathy. If you were prescribed medication for your sinus infection it is possible you are getting an adverse effect. You would need to look up the drugs you have been taking and see if these could potentially cause a neuropathy. Anyway, you shouldn't change any of your meds without consulting with your doctor. So you probably just need to go to the doctor and maybe he will refer you to a neurologist if he can't figure it out. If you wanted to try to make sure it wasn't diabetes you could proably just get one of those finger stick glucose checks and compare it with normal levels depending on whether you had been fasting or not. SOunds like you should just go to the doctor and have it evaluated. You might want to have your choleterol levels checked while you are at it.

http://www.emedicine.com/emerg/topic927.htm
"MDMA is a member of a family of amphetamine derivatives known as MDA. Structurally, MDMA is similar to the stimulant methamphetamine and the hallucinogen mescaline. Like other amphetamines (in particular, dopamine and norepinephrine), it causes catecholamine release from presynaptic vesicles. However, MDMA also is a selective serotonergic neurotoxin that causes massive release of serotonin (ie, 5-hydroxytryptamine [5-HT]) and is postulated to inhibit its uptake. In animal models, it has been demonstrated to cause long-term destruction of 5-HT axons and axon terminals. No randomized clinical human studies exist, and one always must be cautious when extrapolating animal study data and applying it to human models. However, studies demonstrate lowered concentrations of the 5-HT metabolite 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) in the cerebrospinal fluid of regular MDMA users. This correlates with a similar decrease reported in primates with brain damage induced by MDMA."
"In 1985, published reports stated that MDMA and its demethylated metabolite 3,4-methylenedioxyamphetamine (MDA) had long-term neurotoxic effects in laboratory animals. As a result of the study and concern over MDMA's increasing recreational use, the Drug Enforcement Agency placed MDMA in Schedule I of the Controlled Substance Act, hence declaring the drug illegal. Despite its illegal status as of 1986, the use of MDMA has continued to increase and has risen dramatically since the arrival of the "rave" phenomenon. "

I remember when that stuff hit the market in 84 or 85 and for a brief time was even available in "headshops" because there were no laws against it.
I know there are adverse effects just from knowing people who abused it to the extreme. I have not kept up with any of them to know how they turned out years later. I think the body has an amazing resilience to repair itself and the medical establishment discredits itself with claims of "Long term adverse effects" and the such. Also I'm open to the idea that for the casual user its more likely that there is virtually no side effect.
I just have little trust in the studies.

And even after all these warnings, trying to protect us against these potential dangers. We still want to go and do it, perhaps just a unconcious rebelious instinct, one that will always be there.
Why do they restrict drugs like this, but allow damaging drugs like nicotine and alcohol? Its a farce and I believe it should be pro-choice. These 'people at the top' who think they know whats best for us, all they do is kill us, instil fear and instigate wars constantly. They have created such a crappy place for us to live in, where intense competition and stepping on other peoples hopes and dreams is the only way to be successful, where nice guys finish last. They don't care about anything, its all an illusion.
But in so doing this becomes the only escape for people who are not satisfied with the standard 'methods of release'; the cigerette, which is pointless and only serves to drain money and keep us addicted, sometimes, many times a day as we 'gasp' for that next ciggy. Along with alcohol and its related problems such as violence and physical and mental effects and its addiction 'acoholism'.
I feel the only reason that they push drugs like these to be illegal is exactly the reason why they are popular, because on drugs, we are not doing they say or want, but what they say or want isn't always 'good' for us, as demonstrated regularly.
And that is why I will always advocate, not the actions of drug-taking, but the choice at least. Even then I'm quite positive it will incur the same sentiment as t-totalers with alcohol and successful quitters, because you have the the choice to say NO too.

You sound so fukn stupid it's all most like someone made it up to be as stupid as possible. Cigerettes and alcohol are legal because the majority want them to be and they elect people to keep them legal. Alcohol in moderation isn't harmful. There are more cigerette restrictions all the time.

You're so fond of citing 'studies' - try this one:
Heavy Drinking May Shrink Brain Size, Accelerate Mental Decline
By Joi Preciphs
May 3 (Bloomberg) -- Drinking too much alcohol on a regular basis may speed the shrinking of the brain that comes with age and accelerate mental decline, a study showed.
Brain scans of more than 1,800 people showed that those who consumed more than 14 drinks a week had about 1.6 percent less brain volume compared with nondrinkers. The effect was more pronounced among women than men, said lead researcher Carol Ann Paul, an instructor at Wellesley College near Boston.
Size reductions in certain parts of the brain have been linked to Alzheimer's disease in previous research. More than 12 million Americans could be diagnosed as alcohol dependent, and consuming 12 to 15 drinks a week places a person at risk of the condition, according to the U.S. National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.
``The study is a snapshot in time,'' Paul said in a telephone interview yesterday. ``We're not looking at their entire history. The next steps would be to look at the longitudinal effects of alcohol, the effects over a lifetime.''
More research is needed to help determine whether the results apply to a wider population and specifically what the connection means, Paul said.
Paul and her colleagues were looking for signs that alcohol might slow brain aging in a way similar to the reduction in heart disease that studies have shown for people who consume low- to moderate amounts. Paul presented the study results at the American Academy of Neurology's annual meeting in Boston yesterday.
The researchers examined results of brain scans performed on men and women 34 to 88 years old and without signs of dementia. Dividing the group into nondrinkers, former drinkers, low, moderate and high drinkers, the researchers measured brain volume in relation to skull size, considered a marker of brain aging.
People with a 12-year history of heavy drinking had less brain volume than those who began drinking more moderately during that period and later consumed greater amounts, Paul said.
Heavy drinking seemed to have the most negative impact on the brain volume of women in their 70s, she said. Past studies have suggested that older women have risk factors that make them particularly vulnerable to the harmful effects of heavy drinking.
According to the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, almost 18 million Americans abuse alcohol. Each year, more than 100,000 Americans die of alcohol-related causes. (http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601102&sid=anEGlaG0KXK8&refer=uk)

You know dumbasses that want to argue shit all day about little crap they picked up here and there without any idea of the big pictures and using that to invalidat every fucking thing proven to be true deserve whatever they get and no one has the time or cares enough even if they did to straighten their ass out. There is nothing worse than some dipshit that enjoys arguing with experts about their field of expertise because they have no fucking life. I've seen it a million times in the hospital. It is always somebody with a personality disorder and no job that no one wants to be around who actually enjoys being in the hospital so they can give everyone a hard time spouting off a bunch of crap as they see themselves as the noble victim while in reality multiple people who are working in the hospital to trying to help people with real problems through no fault of their own have to waste their time arguing with dumbshits who think they are in debate class while arguing with experts who finally just say fuck this guy he's out of here.

Consider this:
The common conspiracy that "Big Tobacco" as well as "Big Alcoholic beverage" interest are a shadow government of their own twisting the minds of the establishment. Having meetings in dark and smoky board rooms and exploiting the masses.
If one goes back in time in five year increments all the way back to the founding of America. They cannot name me a point in any one of them that a political party had the power to overcome a super majority of the people.
We live in a democracy type government a representative republic. Any party who attempted that would have gone down hard. Not because everyone smokes either. I do not smoke at all. I think it is great that people can no longer smoke in restaurants unless they are in a designated section. Thing is though it is really quite simple we want to be able to enjoy the freedom to kill ourselves if we so choose.
People are more likely to die prematurely if they drive motorcycles so what should we do? Outlaw motorcycles? Hang gliding? Swimming at the beach? Riding a skateboard? Eating a cheeseburger? Being lazy and lounging around on the couch? Drinking caffeinated beverages?
Look I simply want to enjoy my time hear so I will ride my motorcycle. Some times like a moth to a flame I will flirt with disaster. And if I die young (a foregone idea since I'm 40 and content to meet my maker) then so be it. I lived while I was alive. I have no real joy for smoking but if that was my pleasure then fine. Death is not the worst thing that can happen. But wearing a three day old shitty diaper while being stowed safely away on an old folks home till all of my complete estate has been totally drained hell that is not living.
Think about it. ;) Sometimes you are so damn right on Dis how can you also be so wrong.

I understand and respect the way you feel. Would you like to talk about it? I understand that you are sad and things may not being going as you would like in your life. If you would like I can arrange for you to talk with a social worker.

...line after line of incessant rambling...
I could have said alcohol is harmful but blah blah this amount is okay pretty much unless you want to get technical about it blah blah blah but since it's not measureable the negative effects blah blah blah. You know dumbasses that want to argue shit all day about little crap they picked up here and there without any idea of the big pictures and using that to invalidat every fucking thing proven to be true deserve whatever they get and no one has the time or cares enough even if they did to straighten their ass out. They pretty much just get what they deserve. If you want to try to pick apart some bullshit about alcohol that I'm more fucking aware of then you could ever imagine having spent innumerable hours in the hospital and studying hours on end then that is your fucking problem and enjoy your ectasy laden brain damage. I will continue to drink a few beers in moderation and laugh at your retarded ass so fk you.
...and the nausem continues...
Oh, and btw, I don't mean to argue with you, but for clarification, I've never done extasy.

Honestly Dan you should objectively read over your posts. Lomo had some valid points and it is interesting to note that moderation may be the ultimate answer at some level alcohol can be good or bad. And then you go into this irrational attack mode. I think if you saw yourself the way others do you would be embarrassed.

Neither really. I can't handle alcohol. I have a very high tolerance because of my size I guess, and end up drinking 1500 calories just to get a mild buzz. Not worth it.

Tolerance can come with drinking heavily. I saw a guy in the ER with a blood alcohol level that would kill 3 normal people acting like he was mildly buzzed. He drank a 1/2 gallon of vodka a day. His liver had compensated. Needless to say he has 2 feet and 1 hand in the grave.

Alcohol can be good or bad depending on the person and the amount. There are better ways to raise the HDL. It was based on studies showing the French had lower rates of heart dz and drank wine with meals. At first they thought it was something like the tanins in the alchohol but then it was shown to be the alchohol raising HDL. It also raises Triglycerides which can be bad depending on the levels. LDL is the big player. I am not going to go back and forth as I have better things to do. If someone has preexisting liver disease, preexisting whatever dz that is blabhh blah balh this is boring the shit out of me. If people would just use common sense ans look up there own shit. I have better things to do than argue with some dope head about whether ectasy causes brain damage for 100 pages of shit comprable to the 9-11 conspiracy theory. I gave out the info and you tards can take it or leave it. It is not my responsibiility to be your mommy or your daddy. You can take it or leave it and the repercussion lie on your shoulders.

You sound so fukn stupid it's all most like someone made it up to be as stupid as possible. Cigerettes and alcohol are legal because the majority want them to be and they elect people to keep them legal. Alcohol in moderation isn't harmful. There are more cigerette restrictions all the time.
If we're going to degenerate into mindless petty insults, simply because you disagree, then you're a stupid arrogant cock, who thinks, that just because they've spent some time learning about something, that they're the total almighty authority on it. All you do is chain together lots of complex medical terms in the dual effect of confusing someone and make you look smarter, and I'm sure I can go on and on about the delphi programming language, or how to convert decimal into binary all day, and you wouldnt get it and it would make me look smarter wouldnt it?, but really you're just a complete asshole who hides behind his degree or knowldge considering it a sort of 'twat' shield that will protect you from all the offensive backlash from you being a cock.
Now I try and be neutral as much as I can, I have an opinion on something thats for sure, but I dont go round assuming that everything I say is 'the way' and I word my posts as such. All you do 'dan' or 'cock' or whoever you are, is disagree and give us your never ending medical puke, I don't care if you're right or wrong, if you ever spoke to me like that in real life i'd give you something to fucking bandage.

So you're giving us the usual then; confuse us with technobabble and if that doesn't work, resort to the lowest common denomonator: insult them for being stupid. You're starting to turn into a 1 trick pony and its pretty funny to watch, because even for all your 'textbook knowledge' you still cant construct an intelligent, offensive statement that doesn't use whatever I haven't already admited, thus being pointless. Cite anything you want, you still haven't addressed my original point, which I will give you the luxury of re-reading, despite your claims of having 'better things to do' - you obviously prove yourself wrong with the sheer amount of time you spend posting here. I still remain baffled as to why you continue to reference HDL/LDL when you respond to my posts - I have yet to refute (or even comment, for that matter) any comment you (or anyone else) has posted concerning cholesterol.
Now, it seems obvious to me that you disregard any post that offers criticism, or even a different viewpoint, but I would hope that anyone that has proceeded far enough into even a preparatory career in anything medically related, would be wise enough to examine viewpoints contrary to their own. I'm probably wasting my time with this one, though.
You continue to mention ecstasy, and now you're using 9-11 to validate your opinion. Why?
