If you live in Mountain View, CA, the whole city is a hot-spot. I'm starting to see more Wi-Fi locations at Krystals, McDonalds, etc. I heard the entire campus of Auburn University is Wi-Fi. Anyone know what kind of range they can get out of wireless routers these days? How many repeaters does it take to link up such a large area? Any geeks out there know what time it is on that?

they make reperters and routers that reach 100 meters, but they ussually put a repeter every 75 meters North, south, east, and west from the router/hot switch. they Mail campus at NCSU is WiFi, it fucks with my Smartphone when I am not in the telemtry lab

This might help if you are thinking about hijacking onto their network. Hackaday.com has some really good articles about making homemade amplified antennas to increase your reception if you get within range of a hot spot that is wide open.

Nice - I'm going to have to check that out soon... :)
Ran into a few 'open' networks during my vacation, but mainly used them to download torrents... No matter what, if I was online at any time in the last two weeks, my chick had a radar that alerted her, and she automatically claimed the computer as her 'myspace' time...

Have you seen the pringles can signal booster? A guy I used to work with made one, road around seeing how many open networks there were. Of course with the new tech all you have to do is ride around with your laptop on and you can pick them up pretty easily too, as in when Im waiting to get my kids from school I can usually hit two different networks pretty good, depending on which end of the lot im on.

It's only a matter of time before the entire country is wireless...It's just a question of how they're going to make us pay for it...

Wow, I was gonna suggest walkie-talkies, but I think you'd better take it a bit more slowly.
1. Cut the string that connects the soup can at your neighbors treehouse, to the can at your apartment above your parents garage.
2. Yell louder into can when announcing that you have candy.
