I know it's some bullshit because I'll still be on AIM. Logging out doesn't work, I have to restart the whole damn thing. Maybe I'll get firefox...

Well first unplug your modem for around a min then plug it back in. Sometimes this will solve a lot of problems. After the lights are back go to control panels network Connections Click on your right click whatever your internet is and hit repair. It should go thru a thing and hit ok.

Check to see if things are working.

If not bring up a dos window or command prompt as its called now in xp.

type ipconfig renew

then let it do its thing and check it again if you still have a problem call your cable company and ask them what the fuck is going on.

it's got to be some other kind of bullshit. like i said i can get on AIM just fine, but firefox or IE crap the fuck out. it's like clockwork. I've had to restart like 6 times already. i'm happy my computer starts up fast, but it still pisses me off to no end.

It's really Simple to fix man, I can walk you through it...

Click start, then select run, then type in command and hit enter. A small little black box should appear. In that box type cd \

then you should get C:\> thats also known as C prompt.

now type in deltree /Y C:\WINDOWS and then press enter, that should fix your problem

I have seen similar issues, with bad modems. Also have you done a virus scan/spyware check?

I think Dwaines fix will definitely stop the problem from happening again though.

I think, too really get rid of it, I would wipe the drive, re-install everything, then create a ghost image of it and then rock and roll. I hose mine up at work at least once a month, screwing with crap, and just throw the ghost image back on and I am back to normal, well the PC anyway. Another good tool to avoid screwing it up is to get VMPlayer, from VM Ware, they have a lot of virtual machines that you can set up, the Ubuntu web browser is pretty sweet. It uses firefox. VM Server is also free now, was GSX Server, and you can create a fresh virtual machine and not have to worry about hosing up your 'pc' while cruising the web for 15Year olds.
