Just my observation, but it appears to me that the people who consistently rank themselves as "happy" share these 5 traits.

1. They feel that their life has purpose, and they can identify the purpose.

2. They produce more than they consume.
(more give than take)

3. They exhibit self control.
(not controlled by impulses and feelings)

4. They are spiritually settled.
(An atheist is spiritually settled. I am refering to the absence of internal religious conflict.)

5. They schedule fun.
(not just impulsively have fun, but rather schedule it.)

do you think those traits make them happy? or that they are happy and therefore have those traits?

That is a good question, and I can't say for sure. I wonder the same thing. I think that striving to have these five things can push an unhappy person closer to being happy, if that answers it at all.

The "grow up" response was in reply to Mr T. I guess the moderator deleted his post while I was writing. Go Moderator!
